10 Haitian Music Tracks That’ll Make You Wish You Were In Love (Even If You’re The Been There Ain’t Going Back Type)! Now, isn’t that just a dandy title! Well, maybe not for the jaded perhaps? But for those whose little hearts long for that thing called love…this is the perfect list. Let’s get started on yet another list created by your favorite Haitian-American ever…your esteemed girl Kreyolicious. So, without further delay and additional wordiness….

1. Artist/Band
Kiko Tru Rasta
Song: Mwen Bezwen Lanmou
Why It’s on this countdown: Nothing more alluring than a man asking to be loved.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS ARTIST’S MUSIC!

2. Artist/Band: Karizma
Song: Istwa Damou
Why It’s on this countdown: Can you imagine a better pictorial than love falling off the heavens like sweet chocolate (Ahem, “Nan tout rev/Kap simen lov sou mwen tankou shokola”)? With lead singer Emmery Karizma’s voice serving up a luscious blend of R&B and konpa, and those sweet lyrics? Like, wow.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS BAND’S MUSIC!

3. Artist/Band: Djakout Mizik
Song: Aprouve’m
Why It’s on this countdown: Lord, where has this song been all my life? “Banm santans mwen/Banm santans mwen cheri.” What’s my verdict/What’s the verdict babycakes. Ooh, am loving this line. He’s begging for approval. He’s supplicating for the verdict on him. Ooh, this dude’s voice is indescribable. You’re so approved, dawg!

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS BAND’S MUSIC!

4. Artist/Band: Harmonik
Song: Mesi
Why It’s on this countdown: Dude, like I’m a huge believer in gratitude. I remember reading somewhere (can’t recall where), about ingratitude being one of the foremost reasons why marriages break up. When people think they’re being taken for granted…well…that could be a major deal breaker. Sometimes, just knowing that you are appreciated can make one work harder on one’s relationship. Love the vulnerability in the voice of the lead singer on this track. The humility…the, um, gratitude.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS BAND’S MUSIC!

5. Artist/Band:Dat7
Song: Se Konsa
Why It’s on this countdown: What’s love without instructions? And what if there was a way to get instructions…to get a how-to manual? That’s what “Se Konsa” is all about.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS BAND’S MUSIC!

6. Artist/Band: Wanito
Song: Viens Avec Moi
Why It’s on this countdown: Well, for one thing…it’s a boy-girl duet where the concept of division of labor is clearly outlined. Love is a two-way highway. It’s about helping one another grow. That Bujumix production, coupled with lyrics co-written by Wanito and Mickael Music practically makes this a stewey love gumbo.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS ARTIST’S MUSIC!

7. Artist/Band: Dega
Song: Piga Wale
Why It’s on this countdown: Came across this song while perusing Youtube, and it’s actually quite nice. Now, when all the verses of a 4-minute song is just begging and pleading with a woman not to go…you can’t possibly go wrong.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS BAND’S MUSIC!

8. Artist/Band: Phyllisia Ross
Song:Only for You
Why It’s on this countdown: Mwen pre pou’m kouri tout late? Now that’s a powerful line, especially in view of the fact that the Earth is approximately 24,902 miles…but that’s actually just the circumference. “Mwen pre pou’m mache sou dlo/Mwen pre pou’m pote ou sou do”/I’m ready to walk on water. I’m ready to carry you on my back. Let us for a minute examine this couplet…If you’re familiar with the book of Matthew, you know that the first instance of a human walking on water was Jesus…who also gave Simon Peter the power to do so as well. When Peter’s faith faltered, and he fell…Jesus told him that if only he had the faith of a mustard seed. So, in context of these lyrics, both parties in a relationship have to be prepared to have faith in one another…hopefully bigger than that of a mustard seed. And the latter part of those lyrics…carrying someone else on your back means total support…You want to be their backbone…when their own breaks down…Such powerful lyrics.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS ARTIST’S MUSIC!

9. Artist/Band: Xtassy
Song:Eske
Why It’s on this countdown: Seraphic little voices on this track…a sweet production…and the unassuming lyrics…”Eske mwen ka mande’w renmen…Eske mwen ka mande’w damou?” Can I ask you out? Could I ask that we fall in love.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS BAND’S MUSIC!

10. Artist/Band: Bel Plezi
Song: My Queen
Why It’s on this countdown: There’s no better title for a woman than “queen”, especially in this day and age that we live in when words once believed to be pejoratives and insults are being used as synonyms for the word “female” or “woman”. With this song, this band Bel Plezi goes back to old school values.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS GROUP’S MUSIC!

Welcome to another episode of Kreyolicious Music…Kreyolicious Playlist…in which…in which I do a countdown of Haitian music songs that fit a particular theme! Let’s take a look at 10 Most Empowering Songs In Haitian Creole Sung By Women!

1. Artist/Band: Ada
Song: Defile
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: This song makes it clear that women of all colors and shapes are deserving of praise and appreciation. Defile…the Creole word for strut…Strut whether you’re taken for a kannannan (dim-wit), whether you’re being told you’re not enough. Don’t stop dreaming, Ada advises, and you’re so ready to put that counsel into practice when that tight melody, drenched in African drums and instruments reaches your ears.

2.Artist/Band: Princess Eud
Song: Hey
Why its Message Is Empowering: Setting boundaries with others, and positioning yourself as a woman deserving respect and good treatment. In the song, the message is clear: a woman should not act in such a way as to let a man that she can be played with emotionally or in other way for that matter.

3. Artist/Band: Emeline Michel
Song: Banm Pase
Why its Message Is Empowering: “Ti piti pa toujou rete pitimi/Little doesn’t always remain little,” she sings at one point. Go forward, or get out of my way, she sings. This song is uplifting? It’s about telling deadweights (in their many forms) to clear the way. If they are hindering your growth or your progress—to the side (or out of the way altogether) they go!

4. Artist/Band: Tifane
Song: Bel Moun
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: This record emphasizes the need for females to acknowledge the beauty of other females. It encourages women to honor one another, and verbalize each other’s strength. Very beautiful track.

5. Artist/Band: Talie
Song: Bel Tifi :
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: Making unfavorable body comparisons is something we all have done. Oh, if only my butt was as huge as hers. If only my thighs weren’t this way. This is where “Bel Tifi”comes in. This song preaches self-love and acceptance, and body appreciation. It’sthe type of song that should be on all of our radars.

CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT TALIE’S MUSIC!

6. Artist/Band: Rutshelle
Song: Je Suis :
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: Acknowledging one’s shortcomings and flaws, and yet at the same time knowing one’s strengths and resorting to them when the time calls for it. This song’s about self-affirmation, having steel-like confidence in oneself, and realizing that one must keep it moving regardless of what life brings forth.

7. Artist/Band: Saskya Sky
Song: Pretty Girl Whip :
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: This is a run fun track…about being assertive on the dance floor, and when interacting and dealing with the opposite sex.

CLICK HERE TO BUY MUSIC BY SASKYA SKY!

8. Artist/Band: Naida Lynn
Song: Ready to Fly :
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: “I’m ready for something bigger than fame and gold,” Naida sings somewhere in the middle of the song. I think there’s nothing better than aspiring for greater things…things that don’t rot, and that never lose their uplifting and up-building aspect.

CLICK HERE TO BUY NAIDA LYNN’S MUSIC!

9.Artist/Band: Riske
Song: Zanmi :
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: It celebrates female friendship and the sisterhood, but at the same time doesn’t gloss over the problems in the sisterhood, such as the two-facedness are also addressed. Moreover, it demonstrates the importance of setting boundaries early on as a friendship is building.

CLICK HERE TO BUY RISKE MUSIC!

10. Artist/Band: Les Productions Yole Dérose
Song: Nou Gen Fos :
Why It’s Message Is Empowering: Standing tall, no matter what, is the message of this song. The fact that this song has several vocalists sharing the spotlight more than puts weight to the song’s message.

CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE MUSIC FROM THIS ARTIST!

It’s your fave chick Kreyolicious again…this time counting down the best breakup songs.

But wait! Why a countdown like this? We should celebrate love, and not the rupture of love, no? Well, kreyolicious cheries, for one thing…pain is a part of human life (Thanks for nothing, Adam and Eve). For another, when you think about it…the most popular songs on the planet are about love, and breaking up probably comes in second as a topic. So, let’s stop debating and get started with this little countdown! Yay!

In order of most depressing…most heart-wrenching….

1. Band/Artist: Master Dji
Song: Wale Kite’m
Kreyolicious Breakup-Category: She goes, and you’ve lost your reason to live, and you have lost your identity! You fall into manic depression.
Kreyolicious Notes: This singer’s voice is so laden with pain, it almost felt as if he were mourning the death of several relationships, as opposed to just one. This song nearly drove me to tears. No joke. I would not listen to it on an empty stomach (Let’s face it, Kreyolicious timouns, when you’re already hungry, and you put on a sad song or a sad movie, the likelihood of you weeping and sobbing increases). This kreyolicious song captures the harrowing pain we feel in our hearts when the person we thought we were so totally in love with, and was in turn in love with us, leaves with no explanation…which in turns leaves us with feelings of anger, inadequacy and obsession. These type of breakups are hard to recover from, apparently.

CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE THIS SONG ANDOTHER MUSIC BY THIS ARTIST

2. Band/Artist: Yanick Etienne
Break-Up Song: Miste Damou
Kreyolicious Break-up category: A break-up, but one that has a glint of silver lining…a reconciliation may be in progress.
Kreyolicious Notes: Not sure when this song was recorded. Early 90s perhaps? Early 2000s? But goodness, this lady sure has a lovely voice. Silent treatments, a tendency to forget all the great moments, lending a deaf ear to heartfelt apologies, and allowing personal pride to get into the way of reconciliation—are among some of the aspects of a breakup touched upon on this gorgeous ballad.

CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS SONG AND OTHER MUSIC BY THIS ARTIST

3. Band/Artist: Joe Jack
Song: Fèm Dous
Kreyolicious Break-up category: The period during the breakup and the rebound girl hunting.
Kreyolicious Notes: Dude is looking for some “Ti doudou” (uptown sweetie) to make him “dous” (er…sexual favors no doubt), so that he can “bliye” (forget) all the “imilasyon” (mortification) he’s undergone at the hands of the previous women he’s been with. Oh, heck no. This means this guy is not looking for a new love. He’s looking for a temporary fill-in to soothe his ego. Oh! It’s all about him. But you’ve got to admit that this song treats the rebound syndrome—a major aspect of the stages of a breakup. The melody is salsaish…very ballroomesque.

Kreyolicious Notes: Not sure when this song was recorded. Early 90s perhaps? Early 2000s? But goodness, this lady sure has a lovely voice. Silent treatments, a tendency to forget all the great moments, lending a deaf ear to apologies, and allowing personal pride to get into the way of reconciliation—are among some of the aspects of a breakup touched upon on this gorgeous ballad.

4. Artist/Band: Harmonik
Haitian breakup song: Mwen Bouke
Kreyolicious Break-Up: This is the breakup in the on-again, off-again relationship.
Kreyolicious Notes: We have quite a narrative in this song. He cheated. She found out somehow. They more or less made up, and have agreed to let bygones be bygones. But wait! Her heart is still tearing from his infidelity. He’s apologized over and over…’til he doesn’t know what to say anymore. He feels like she’s using his infidelity to torture him needlessly—taking “plezi” (sick pleasure) in making him . There’s a spoken monologue at the end of the song…she decided to break-up with him again, while he thought they were under good terms again. And she got with another man…Now this song, again, is about a reconciliation that should never have materialized in the first place. The
CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS SONG AND OTHER MUSIC FORM THIS BAND!

5. Band/Artist: K-Zino
Haitian Breakup Song: Kè Mwen Kontan
Kreyolicious Break-up category: Denial, followed by an actual reconciliation.
Kreyolicious Notes: Aw, he’s begging for another chance. He can’t handle life without her. He’s waiting on that phone call. And out of nowhere, there’s a knock at the door…it’s her! One wonders what will happen the next time there’s some sort of separation again? And something tells me there will be another separation…and the narrator won’t be able to handle it.
CLICK HERE TO BUY THIS SONG AND OTHER MUSIC BY THIS BAND!

6. Band/Artist: Daan Junior
Haitian Breakup Song: Kite’m Ale
Kreyolicious Break-up category: The breakup that occurs when one party is fed up, and wants to jump ship before things totally deteriorate.
Kreyolicious Notes: A voluntary departure is what this song’s about. The narrator is tired of being stifled in this relationship, the emotional pressures, and the verbal abuse, and disrespect. Lawd, it’s too much to be borne. So…Out, he goes!

7. Band/Artist: K-Dans
Haitian Breakup Song: Touman
Kreyolicious Break-up category: Break-up resulting from death.
Kreyolicious Notes: I clicked on this song out of curiosity. And it turns out, it’s just what my countdown needed. This song sounds less depressing than it should. Some great vocal work by the lead singer of this group. When a breakup happens because one of the parties departs in death, it’s emotionally devastating. One can say it’s probably the worst type of breakup. But as the singer points out in the lyrics, a love that dies lives on forever. Only thing is, the next woman will have to deal with a dead rival. And we all know how we tend to deify the dead sometimes. We forget about all their flaws, and remember only the good about them.

8. Band/Artist: Zenglen
Haitian Breakup Song: Sincerely Yours
Kreyolicious Break-up category: Extreme denial post-breakup breakup
Kreyolicious Notes: Wow, dude is so obsessed, he’s literally playing for his girl’s new man to have cold feet. He’s hopeful, in a loving way, not thoroughly stalker-scary. Just a sincere-hearted man who realizes that he messed up when things were good, and that he’s not ready (nor will he ever be) to see his woman in another man’s arms.

9. Band/Artist: Nu Look
Haitian Breakup Song: It Wasn’t Meant to Be
Kreyolicious Break-up category: The reflective break-up.
Kreyolicious Notes: In retrospect, this relationship should never have come into existence, the narrator contends in the lyrics. He isn’t bitter. Nor does he want to try again. Had she ever loved him, he muses. But he wants to make it clear that the lawn isn’t closely-cut or greener on the other side for the ex. Or, so he hopes.

10. Band/Artist: Carimi
Haitian Breakup Song: Kita Nago
Kreyolicious Break-up category: The one-sided breakup!
Kreyolicious Notes: This song is really frightening. The playfulness of the production practically masks the sinister aspect of the lyrics. This is about a man who’s obsessed with a former flame. He promises to chases her in all corners of the earth to track her down. You guys, this is Witness…er Ex-Girlfriend Protection Program matter! Restraining order!

Haitian socially conscious songs!

Kreyolicious playlist time! In which…in which I sit and scour Youtube for days at a time to look for Haitian music songs that fit a particular theme. Today’s theme…socially-conscious songs. Have listened to songs by the Black Eyed Peas where they denounce domestic terrorism, and have listened to Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”, and all these urban griot-rappers rap about the hood…Now, it’s time to see, examine and report on what Haitian artists have been up to in that arena…Let’s go, ya’ll…let’s see what’s on the playlist.

1. Kreyolicious Artist/Band: Stanley Georges
Kreyolicious Song: Ou Mechan
Social Issue Tackled>: Statutory rape, pedophilia!
Where It hits Home: The lyrics speak of voluptuous young girls whose figures attract lecherous men. These lecherous men prey on young underage women young enough to be their daughters. Very nice vocals, and the message is very touching.

Kreyolicious Side Note: One of the striking things about this song is the point-of-view. Fingers are not being pointed at the young women as the initiators of these illicit relationships. There’s no victim-blaming, only a call to cease the exploitation of impoverished young women.

2. Kreyolicious Artist/Band: Darbenz
Kreyolicious Song: Pa leve Sou Men Li
Social Issue Tackled>: Domestic/relationship violence
Where It hits Home: Well, the lines hit home all over. Someday, I’ll tell you this really lengthy story about how I came across this song, but today, we’ll just cover why it’s on the playlist.

Kreyolicious Side Note: An elaborate story about domestic violence, undocumented immigration, and overall public announcement about the dangers of staying in an abusive relationship. Again, a song whose melody’s so catchy, but not enough to make you forget its message.

3. Kreyolicious Artist/Band: Kompa Kreyol
Kreyolicious Song: Pouki Sa
Social Issue Tackled>: Gun Control
Where It hits Home: A song about a little boy named David who emulates some of the programming he’s seen on TV. He sees his dad’s gun, and thinks that it’s just like one of those contraptions he’s seen on TV. Unable to differentiate between reality and make-believe, David opts for make-believe. Only things is, real life isn’t make-belief. David shoots himself to death.

Kreyolicious Side Note: This song is lovely. Firstly, I haven’t come across a song in Kreyol that treats issues of gun control, and the effects of television on little kids, as well as parental surveillance and the lack of it. David watched shoot ’em ups and cowboy movies. Is that all that’s shown on his TV screen at home? This song also pushes us to look at other issues too…like imported programming from other countries and their effect on developing countries.

Have to also mentioned that this song offers great vocal delivery from the lead singer of this band, and that the issue is treated very, very effectively.

4. Kreyolicious Artist/Band: Emeline Michel
Kreyolicious Song: Djanie
Social Issue Tackled>: Domestic violence
Where It hits Home: But don’t I already have a domestic violence track on this countdown? Well, it won’t hurt to have another more. What’s more, whereas the other song was told from the point of view of a male, this one is told from the female perspective. It’s a friend talking to a friend, and it’s recounted in a personable way.

Kreyolicious Side Note: The narrator tells Djanie that she’s been there before, so it’s not as if it’s a random person addressing her, but rather someone who knows what it’s like being treated with verbal and physical disrespect.

CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE MUSIC BY THIS ARTIST

5. Kreyolicious Artist/Band: Krezi Mizik
Kreyolicious Song: Ti Mafi
Social Issue Tackled>: Prostitution
Where It hits Home: All I have to say about this song is…Can I get a podyab for this Ti Mafi person? Lawdie, she has to punch the clock on a nightly basis and she ain’t no night auditor at the Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn. Non! She’s involved in the trading of pleasures of the flesh. Her dad left the house, and she and her mom lives in some shack somewhere in Port-au-Prince with her younger siblings. She’s under electrical poles all night, trying to get herself a client.

Kreyolicious Side Note: This song is so depressing, but I like how the songwriter behind the song put in lines about the need for her to recognize her self-worth, and to get herself out of that career. So, at the end, we are not served with just a song about a young woman whose circumstances induce her into the street thot life, but we are told that soon there’ll be a way out.
