Rapper-singer Freedom dropped “Tanbou” this week, through his record label Freedom Recordz, in association with another label Diyosa. Could his long-promised all-Creole album be not far behind?

The song carries the Freedom signature, with the gospel-inflected delivery, and the inspirational-socially conscious messages that he’s all too well-known for.

On practically every song he drops, he always sounds like he’s going under emotional duress. There’s this urgency that’s present in his timber. With “Tanbou” (the Creole word for drum), he’s not singing the praise of the instrument. The instrument is a reference to Haiti and its heritage. Freedom uses the drum as a symbol to urge other to stay “woke”, as we say in the hood these days. Drums can make you dance, but they can also wake you up from indolent slumber.

The artist promised some love songs on the new album, so fans can look forward to a whole lot more variety.

This track is fresh though. Let’s see what else he’ll come up with.

Florida-bred filmmaker Dudley Alexis decided to dig deep into the history of soup joumou—Haitian pumpkin soup that is consumed heavily in some Haitian-American households on the first of the year. The documentary Liberty in A Soup is the result of his cultural research.

The documentary is a breakthrough for his career. It’s his first feature documentary, and he not only directed it, but also wrote and edited the work. Interestingly enough, it was a conversation in a taxi that led him to produce Liberty in A Soup! The cabbie, who was of West African origin, asked Alexis about the significance of the soup, and the director decided to create a documentary that would explain its history to his fellow Haitian-Americans and other curious folks.

Liberty in A Soup contains interviews with Dr. Benjamin Hebblethwaite, a professor at the University of Florida, who lectures on Haitian Creole and culture, Babacar M’Bow, an art curator, and author Edwidge Danticat, among other commentators and experts.

Prior to releasing Liberty in A Soup, Mr. Alexis produced several short documentaries. He was heavily involved with the Miccosukee Magazine, as post production producer.

Richard Cave, a of now-defunct band Carimi has stepped out with Kai, his new band. He’s doing things big right off the bat, releasing “Malad”, a rad ballad alongside with a music video for the song.

In the lyrics for the track, we have a lovesick narrator who likens his obsessive and overly passionate feelings for a woman to an ailment. He’s forever condemned to the intensive care unit, but he likes it that way! He needs his “siwo”, he insists.

So far, so good. This new band has virtually retained the sound and flavor of Cave’s former band Carimi. Surely, with time, we’ll be able to distinguish a Kai song from a Carimi song.
