Haiti’s Millennial creatives showcased their talent over the weekend in Port-au-Prince during the second edition of Living Hart. An initiative of fashion designer and philanthropist Gayel”Cutiega” Pierre, Living Hart had its first edition in May. This initial expo was so popular, the founder decided to hold one for the month of July at the venue Yanvalou, located in Pacot, a suburb of Port-au-Prince.

The Second Edition featured entertaining performances by Akoustik and K’Zino, two bands emerging out of Haiti and was hosted by musician Badikamal. DJ Nos was on hand to rock the crowd. Haiti’s Millennial creatives from every imaginable creative sector made their presence felt: photography to visual arts to the performing arts.

Living Hart allows her to promote the talent of her fellow creatives, whose opportunities to showcase themselves are thought to be intermittent at best. Now that Living Hart Haiti has concluded, the creative entrepreneur has plans to do launches in a U.S. city—most likely Miami.

The song will feature ATL’s Future, Lil Durk, and Casey Veggies.

In an interview with the radio show “The Breakfast Club” earlier this year, the rapper spoke about being born in Miami, and being shipped off to Haiti during his early years, only to be sent for by his family during his childhood.

On the cover of the “Port-au-Prince” mixtape, Zoey Dollaz sits starring defiantly at his voyeurs. He’s wearing a stylish jacket and behind him are a stack of vintage television screens showing images from Haiti’s past.

One of the hottest breakout rappers of the year, Zoey Dollaz is on the Freebandz record label (Future’s label via Epic Records). After he blew up with his track “Blow a Check”, industry pundits were looking left and right to see who would snatch him first, and Future beat out everybody and got his boy…quick!

Check out the preview video of “Port-au-Prince”, in which the rapper spits in Haitian Creole and English.

Considered a music legend by many for his contributions not only to Haitian music, but to Haitian broadcasting, Widmaier was born in Port-au-Prince in the 1930s. At thirteen, he had built his first radio. He was a popular star at El Rancho, and performed there regularly at the beginning of his career.

He was part of Issa El Saieh’s band, and sung lead on several records. Among his recordings was the jazz-inflected “Woman in Love”.

Mushi and Joel, two of Widmaier’s sons went on to follow his musical footsteps and formed a band called Zekle in the early 1980s.

Widmaier’s father Ricardo Widmaier owned a radio station, and with this exposure, he learned about technical aspects of radio. He later created his own radio station Radio Metropole, which is still operated by Richard, one of his sons.

The Haiti Tech Summit, founded by Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree Christine Souffrant-Ntim, will include more than one-hundred speakers, including actress Vicky Jeudy, venture capitalist Ben Horowitz, Google Accelerator founder Roy Glassberg, uber-developer Matt Terrell of Facebook. The two-day event is being billed as Haiti’s largest techie event ever, and it’s not hype!

Haiti’s techies will not be left out of the event, thank you very much! Christian Roy Frombrun, a tech and marketing strategist is among the keynote participants, as are Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Ralph Dupoux, photographer and techie Samuel Dameus, Davidson Toussaint of Haiti Tourism Inc, Cleve Mesidor, Michael Verch, and radio host and multimedia personality Carel Pedre. Michele Duvivier Pierre-Louis, a former official as well as Haiti’s current president Jovenel Moise are among the keynote speakers.

Many Haitian-Americans are also on board for the event, including Regine Vital, Guelma Emile Allen, Nancy Douyon, Guerlince Semerzier, Caroline Racine, Marc-Alain Boucicault, L’Union Suite founder Wanda Tima-Gilles, Gilles Sassine, Dori Alexandre, Sandra Florvella-Pierre of Haitian Businesses, LLC; Daphnee Charles of COCREAD, and many many more.

You need more names? Your wish is my command…Naisha Silva of Google, Angie Carrillo, Kairos CEO Ryan Brackeen, Elisa Page, founder of BlogHer, Adi Abili, entrepreneur/inventor Ryan Foland, Laura Pincus Hartman, the founder of Ecole de Choix, the multi-lingual school in Mirebalais, Haiti. And ooh, Black Enterprise’s tech editor Sequoia Blodgett is also be among the speakers, as will be Kyra Kyles of Ebony. And how nice to see that Rhonesha Byng of Her Agenda among those present. Actually am a fan of Her Agenda..

Look, my fingers are getting tired…very tired…so many great minds…so many awesome thinkers…like wow…

So many solid participants, so many speakers from every field imaginable. This isn’t a tech summit…it’s more like a two-day masterclass.

Lawd is all I can say! What a tech show!

And how wonderful that it’s Haiti Tech Summit! This event has so much potential…it gives me vertigo just thinking of what it can grow into.

The Wedding at Port-au-Prince by Hans Christoph Buch is a novel written by a German with Haitian roots (this book was actually originally written in German and has been translated by Ralph Manheim). Buch’s great-grandfather Louis was a pharmacist who emigrated to Haiti, just as the 1800s was about to come to a close.

The Wedding at Port-au-Prince is the fictionalized story of German communities in Haiti, but it really begins with the arrival of the French admiral Villaret de Joyeuse, who sails into Port-au-Prince in 1802. This French beginning will give way to the German aspect of the novel’s pages later.

Buch recounts the story of Pauline, the Haitian woman his great-grandfather marries, who dies under mysterious circumstances that her countryman deems vodun-related. Intersected within Buch’s book, are letter exchanges that detail Haitian-German relations from the 1890s down to the 1970s, from the scandal of the so-called Luders affairs, an incident that was to mar relations between Germany and Haiti.

Intrigues, duels, diplomatic gaffes really aren’t supposed to be part of any wedding celebration, but Buch’s story is really about the marriage of two communities, one from Europe and the other the hot Caribbean island of Haiti.

On this day of 9 March 1807 Alexandre Petion becomes President of the Republic of Haiti.
–
Following the assassination of Dessalines on October 17, 1806, Pétion championed the ideals of democracy and clashed with Henri Christophe who wanted absolute rule. Christophe was elected president, but he did not believe the position had sufficient power, as Pétion kept powers for himself. Christophe went to the north with his followers and established an autocracy, declaring the State of Haiti. The loyalties of the country divided between them, and the tensions between the blacks and mulattoes of the North and South, respectively, were reignited.
–
Pétion was elected President in 1807 of the southern Republic of Haiti. After the inconclusive struggle dragged on until 1810, a peace treaty was agreed to and the country was split in two.
