Haiti-born, Congo-raised, Germany and France-educated, award-winning director Raoul Peck is at it again. His newest film is Murder in Pacot, a mystery-thriller about life in a suburb of Port-au-Prince shortly after the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. According to Indiewire, the film is inspired partly by a 1968 film by Italian filmmaker Paolo Pausini.

Peck is a very accomplished filmmaker. Have yet to see one of his best films Sometimes in April, but I have seen segments of Lumumba.

Murder in Pacot was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival last year. It was also show in Berlin.

Filmmaker Raoul Peck and his production company Velvet Film is undertaking yet another cinematic opus: a feature on the life of German intellectual Karl Max. Peck, was of course, partly educated in Germany.

Cast members for the film include the French actors August Diehl, Stefan Konarske, Luxembourg actress Vicky Krieps and Olivier Gourmet, a dramatic actor from Belgium. The film is being promoted as a biopic and will cover four years (1844-1848) in the life of the famous thinker. It will also explore his friendship with Fredriech Engels, himself a famous philosophical figure in 19th Century Europe.

As is usually the case with his films, Mr. Peck is not only directing, but took part in the writing of the screenplay. He co-wrote Le Jeune Karl Marx (the French title of the film) with screenwriters Pascal Bonitzer and Pierre Hodgson.

Even before Peck started filming the project in Belgium, French firm Diaphana picked up the film for distribution. Well, good for Mr. Peck. Le Jeune Karl Marx is set to be released next year.

By special invitation of the Atlanta Francophonie Festival, the award-winning, Haiti-born, Germany and France-educated filmmaker will be discussing his craft during a panel discussion at Emory University on April 7.

It’s all part of the University’s Francophone Film Festival. Being the well-known filmmaker that he is, Peck is going to be honored with his own mini-festival. Three of his films will be show that day: Lumumba, Fatal Assistance, and Man by the Shore. He will also be present at the African Literature Association Conference as keynote speaker on April 8.

Haiti-born film director Raoul Peck is up for the Best Documentary award for his James Baldwin Documentary I Am Not Your Negro. The Oscars are going to be held tonight…and I Am Not Your Negro is one of the most-discussed and most-reviewed productions of the year. It won the LA Film Critics Award for Best Documentary. And earlier this month, when Peck attended the Berlinale Film Festival in Berlin, Germany, there was as much buzz about the James Baldwin doc as there was about his feature film Young Karl Marx, that was being screened at the festival.
