On this day of 9 March 1807 Alexandre Petion becomes President of the Republic of Haiti.
–
Following the assassination of Dessalines on October 17, 1806, Pétion championed the ideals of democracy and clashed with Henri Christophe who wanted absolute rule. Christophe was elected president, but he did not believe the position had sufficient power, as Pétion kept powers for himself. Christophe went to the north with his followers and established an autocracy, declaring the State of Haiti. The loyalties of the country divided between them, and the tensions between the blacks and mulattoes of the North and South, respectively, were reignited.
–
Pétion was elected President in 1807 of the southern Republic of Haiti. After the inconclusive struggle dragged on until 1810, a peace treaty was agreed to and the country was split in two.

In October 1790, he arrived in Saint-Domingue. Meeting with Jean-Baptiste Chavannes, another free man of color, militiaman, and veteran of the American Revolution, Ogé soon gathered a force of about 250 to 300 free men of color. This group men successfully defeated or frightened away several detachments of colonial militia sent out from Cap-Français.

Ogé and his rebels were flushed out by a larger force of professional soldiers and forced across the border into the Spanish colony of Santo Domingo. On 20 November 1790, Ogé and 23 of his associates, including Jean-Baptiste Chavannes, were captured in Hinche, then part of the Spanish controlled part of Hispaniola. They surrendered after receiving guarantees of safety, but the Spanish authorities nevertheless returned Ogé and his men to the colonial government of de Blanchelande in Le Cap.

Their treatment served only to heat up the already boiling cauldron of dissatisfaction among free men of color and slaves in the colony. Ogé became an important symbol of the injustices of a colonial slave society that wanted to restrict the benefits of the French Revolution to whites only. (Some sources differ on the exact date of february).

Joseph Davilmar Théodore (1847–1917) was President of Haïti from 7 November 1914 to 22 February 1915. Born in the town of Ennery in the northern half of the country, he began his career in the military, and organized the cacao farmers of the north in the revolt against President Oreste Zamor. His inability to pay the farmers as he had promised for participating in the rebellion soon led to his resignation in favor of Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam. Vilbrun who ousted him, was his delagate in the North, he was also previoulsy sentenced to 15 years of forced labour for his implication in the consolidated bonds affair. Théodore served as the President of the Senate of Haiti in 1910s.

It is under his governement that the US marines, “to prevent further raids”, came to Haiti aboard the USS Machias and took $500,000 in gold from the National Bank (franco-german) to the City Bank in New York. This all originated from a dispute between the government, the railroads and the National Bank, there were guarantees against leases of coaling or naval stations to any European country. When Davilmar Theodore ousted Zamor, he rejected those demands. Thats when he rejected those demands and his government printed large quantities of paper currency and seized 65,000$ of the bank’s gold supply.
President Pierrot was obsessed with the idea of punishing the Dominicans for having declared their independence on February, 1844. A short war broke out between the two neighbors without a clear victor.

Before being the 5th president of Haiti, Jean-Louis Michel Pierrot, fought under the command of Henri Christophe who crowned himself president for life of the State of Haiti (1807-1811), then had himself crowned King Henry I by the archbishop of Milot, and ruled the Kingdom of Haiti (1811-1820). Jean-Louis Michel Pierrot led a black battalion at the Battle of Vertières in 1803.Hence, he was instrumental in the last decisive Battle of the Haitian Revolution. Historians are unsure about his birth day, but he was born into slavery in 1761 in Acul-du-Nord, and was illiterate. When Christophe created a nobility in the North, he made Pierrot a prince.

Louis Michel Pierrot became president of Haiti on April 16, 1845. During the first Haitian Kingdom, Henry I promoted Pierrot to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Army and granted him the hereditary title of Prince. As President of Haïti he was intended to be a figurehead for the mulatto ruling class. After a failure in that role, he was overthrown in a coup d’etat on March 24, 1846, after attempting reforms in the government. He resigned and retired to his plantation called Camp-Louise, where he led a quiet and peaceful life until his death on February 18, 1857.

The North-South Civil War in Haiti: Alexandre Pétion and Henri Christophe

In 1806, Christophe and the Haitian general Alexandre Pétion overthrew Jean Jacques Dessalines. Subsequently, a short civil war broke out between Christophe and Pétion. By February 1807, Haiti was divided between Christophe who had clear charge over the North (State of Haiti) with some of the western part of the island, and Alexander Pétion who led the South also with some of the western part of the new country (Republic of Haiti). Christophe was elected president and served in that capacity from 1807 to 1811.
