Ooh, where are we? Kentucky…somewhere in the ‘Carolinas…Or is this somewhere in Haiti?

Okay, it’s Haiti. Hooray! And look, kreyolicious cheries, there looks to be plenty of vegetation. Far from what the media out here tries to tell us…And who is this boy squatting sitting in the splendor of the grass, there? Is he the leading man?

Or is it this one with those Terminator hater blockers? Oh, wait…are they one in the same?

Um, that granps shirt…

What do we have here? Will this music vid be another one of those about childhood love? Is this a flashback?

At the 0.33 mark he says, “There’s no life without you.” Ooh, I’m loving what I’m hearing at this point.

What a nice view. That sky…those trees…those clouds…

Was this the guys who was initially sitting on the grass? Or is this…

Okay, am not too clear yet on what’s going on here. Is this guy reminiscing about a girl he lost?

And this one with him is the girl he’s with now? He’s pushing her away…like she’s some sort of rebound chick for whom he’s having buyer’s remorse.

Okay, the lyrics aren’t matching the images I’m seeing. He’s singing about how indispensable this girl is to his life, and yet…here he is pushing away this girl who’s stroking him. This could only mean one thing. Poor baby. He’s with this girl, but his mind is elsewhere. On another one…the one he truly loves…the one the lyrics are about. Right? Let me watch some more to see if this hypothesis is correct.

Oh, there goes the girl again. Okay, let’s try to gather all these images together and come up with something. The main guy is reminiscing about a girl from his high school days. He’s now in his college years, and he has a girlfriend, but he can’t get ‘ole girl from his past out of his mind. Aw, look how she puts on her little makeup, and plays model for him, while he fools around with his camera.

Ooh, ole girl wet that hair! Did they go out swimming? And she left her hair cap behind?

Look at her putting on that lipstick. She’s got skills.

Girl must be in love to be doing spur of the moment, hair follicle-damaging actions without her shower cap. Thou must protect thy mane, dear maiden.

Gee, what part of Haiti is this? Have to add it to my list of places to go to. I could see myself throwing a sleeping bag on that ground…going camping. It looks so peaceful. What a romantic environment for those two!

And look at him…The Chocolate Dream (the teenage years)…enjoying the tease.

Ooh, that shirt doesn’t looks so granps now that I can get a full view of The Chocolate Dream (the college years). Aha, he’s talking about returning! So, my theory was correct. So they were enjoying their days of childhood love and out of nowhere, they must have gotten separated…and in spite of being slightly older, he’s never been able to replace her. And he’s not about to lie to himself. His place is with this girl.

No wonder he barely takes off these sunglasses. He’s crying behind those shades. Can I get a podyab for this boy? On a count of one…two…three…PODYAB!

Ah, the subject of his undying affection and love. Oh, wait…in that scene where he’s in that room all alone…the hand of the girl isn’t pushed away…it’s snatched away…or rather it disappears…Aha…so this isn’t another girl…He’s never tried to replace her…he’s haunted by her…the memories of her…Got it. Just had to rewatch that part again. The things…you miss the first time around.

Those are some kreyolicious lips you’ve got there, Karizma dude.

So, he goes to their old meeting place. Trying to exacerbate those memories. He wants to be tortured, apparently.

Ooh, a botanical garden in a shed.

Where are we now? In the past…or present?

The past! For a moment there, I thought this was going to be a present tense reunion.

Look, he’s with his boys now. I wonder if he’s doing this little gathering to get some news of her…

Maybe this buddy, with his mobile phone on hand, has her current phone number?

Ooh, nice décor.

Yo, who dat?

So, it’s her…and there’s two of her to make his torture complete.

That décor again. Look at the roof. Is that refined rattan? Bamboo? Sisal?

Ah, is this her at the party? It must be. Oh, now she’s a blonde. This music video is not only a story about love, but it’s also a story about hair care. You wet your hair, and damage your follicles, and years later, you have to put on a lacefront. Nice lacefront though.

And it is her. There’s no mistaken that smile.

Er, yeah fellas, hold my drink. Imma be right back. He’s spotted her, and he’s wasting no time getting reacquainted. Hooray for him.

Hah, he gives this guy the brush off, and nearly knocks him down. He’s got to get to this girl.

Is it really her?

No, it isn’t. False alarm. Now, they did seem to look alike. Or is it that he sees her face everywhere?

His boys are giving him looks.

Oh, no, he’s taking up the bottle. Don’t do it Chocolate Dream…she’ll turn up. Pray about it.

And the bottle is more than half-way down…and the day is still young.

Ah, that place again.

A nun at a museum…this couldn’t possibly be her…could it?

Well, could it? This would destroy him.

It must be her. Otherwise, why would she be so fixated on this photo out of all the ones at this exhibit? And why does she go straight to this photo…like she knew its exact spot…has it been on display since the teenage years?

Oh, no…this has to be her. There’s no mistaking the resemblance. How will he take this news? Will he become a monk? If they can’t be reunited in body, then they can be reunited in their mutual vows.

Alright, it’s her. Too many visual clues for it to be otherwise. The photo on the wall. Now, his old camera…

That face…Very kreyolicious.

Uh-oh, it so happens that he’s giving a tour to these kids…

The moment of truth…

He remains calm. But you can bet that his bloodstream will freeze over sooner or later. And those birds in that painting undoubtedly are stand-ins for their past…what they wish they could do now…but can’t. She’s bound by her vows to the church, so if he had dreams of reciting vows with her…those dreams are gone with the wind. This is so sad for him. For the rest of his life, he’s going to be tortured by thoughts of what could have been.

The song is called “Mwen Vle Kinbe w” [I Want to Hold You]. In it the two singers (looking very much like brothers, or at the very least cousins), mourn about the two great ladies they’ve lost, and how they long to hold their respective women again. Can I get a podyab?

This is the type of smooth tracks that make the ladies go crazy on the dance floor…so smooth…and so romantic.

And look at Flav Gabel’s hands…in prayer mode. And in the next sequence…

And look at him! He’s dragged his little microphone to the beach just to serenade his girl, and convince her to melt back in his arms.

So, what did you guys think of this video overall? A lot of begging and pleading for a second chance in the verses, but the lyrics never really indicate what the narrator did to cause the separation in the first place, or am I to surmise that it was due to some infidelity issues?

Video: Phyllisia Ross Di Mwen

Have yous seen Phyllisia Ross’ new music video for her song Di Mwen? Well, in case you haven’t, you can do so below. Wearing her curly locks, the Haitian-American singer-songwriter-pianist preaches a message of self-love. The music video features appearances by singer Mickael, as well as a legion of other women.

Miss Ross sings about the sisterhood, but she’s also singing about the importance of having a solid support system.

Wearing a series of form-fitting outfit, and a spider sheath dress that seems to have been inspired by the singer Cher or 1920s silent film star Alla Nazimova, Ross sings passionately about self-acceptance and the need to belong.

Ross has experimented so much over the course of her young career. From being molded by record companies as a South Beach Beyonce, to her finding her true self: a world music artist whose style and vocals know no boundaries. She has some great vocals, and her stage presence is undeniable, getting her tours and performances in New York and Miami, and garnering her plenty of demand in places like Mauritius, to La Reunion, France and Canada.

The fact that she feels as comfortable singing in French and Creole, in addition to her native language English, is earning her fans all over the world. “Konsa”, one of her previously released music videos, has more than 4 million views on her Youtube channel alone. The artist has a great deal of physical appeal, but it’s apparent that while she flaunts it, she’s not depending on it.

I think that with time, we’re going to see her expand professionally. Does Mickael’s appearance in the video hint at a future collaboration? Miss Ross can write and produce for other artists too perhaps? She’s already shown time after time that she’s a very astute songwriter.

Most future filmmakers don’t start out as International Business majors, but that’s exactly what happened to producer/screenwriter/actor Robinson Vil. Vil, who immigrated to the United States from Haiti at 16, thought that his fluency in Creole, French, and English was an indicator that international business was the way to go. Not exactly enthralled by business school curriculum, Vil found it hard to concentrate, and wondered if this was the appropriate path for his future. After taking a semester off to do some soul searching, Vil took an acting class offered by renowned acting coaches Bob Harter and Della Cole of YourAct. The acting bug, it turns out was ravenous and bit him so zealously, that there was no turning back at Georgia State University—where he had been enrolled. So much for a business degree.

Acting led to directing, and the love of directing, led to full immersion in the filmmaking business. For most talents who have worked with Vil, he is seen as the consummate professional. Says actor Miko De Foor, who initially met Vil a decade ago at an actor, and who has starred in Dark Secrets, one of his short films: “I think he goes over scenes in his sleep the night before we shoot.” There is no indecisiveness on the set when Vil is around. De Foor adds: “He knows what he wants, but is also open to suggestions and allows the actor to have some insight as well. That’s not always an attribute of other directors.”

Ask around and it’s pretty much a chorus. Art director Sherie Hodge whose company Folium worked with Vil on the set of his film Life.Less has a lot to say about the director’s work ethic. Vil she says, “is a focused Director with a passion for translating compelling storylines into memorable works art. I see him as an incredible writer who is comfortable with peeling back the layers of social issues and display them through his vivid films. The stories are hard and real.”

After helming several features and shorts intended for the mainstream audience, mainly the aforementioned Life.less and Dark Secrets (and two others in development Friends and Associates, Vibrations), the filmmaker has seen it necessary to turn his attention to Haiti with the project Rasin Mwen [My Roots], a self-written drama that he hopes will take Haitian cinema to the upper echelons of international filmmaking.

Herein follows a conversation with the filmmaker.

Q & A

In the early 1990s, you moved from Haiti to Atlanta. Was it pretty much a culture shock for you?
Yes, it was almost surreal. From boarding the airplane for the very first time out of Haiti. I felt like I was being transported to another universe where the unknown and the opportunities lie and await. My mother provided a very good life for me in Haiti and I wasn’t suffering or anything like that. I was grateful that I was in a place where I can really be anything that I want to be, pursue whatever dream I have and make it a reality.

Did your parents threaten to stomp you/send you back to Haiti when you told them you had changed direction?
My parents were a bit disappointed that I decided to pursue acting instead of finishing school—college—and get a desk job. But, their support never wavered, they knew that I was a disciplined and passionate person and that they could always trust my decisions.

Besides the YourAct training, have you gotten any training in filmmaking, screenwriting or in cinematography?
YourACT was really the place that got me so interested in the industry, they were the first people I studied with and I will forever be thankful to Bob and Della for their teachings and support throughout the years. I never attended any school for filmmaking, etc. I bought many filmmaking books. I read each one of them cover to cover. I worked a regular job for years, saved up and shot many short films to practice what I’ve read in the books. It worked!

Your film company is called Villain Pictures—Villain as in a take on your last name Vil. A Villain Picture is usually an intense drama. Is that a direction you plan on taking for every one of your films?
I’ve been known to be more on the dramatic side of the fence when it comes to my films. But as a film producer and director, one must be versatile; I can direct any genre. I feel like I am now at a point in my career that I feel fully capable, comfortable and experienced to deliver on any project.

Let’s talk about your film Life.less for a bit. You wrote, produced and directed it. How did you come up with the idea for it?
This film was a struggle to produce due to its subject matter—child molestation and child prostitution. Finding the budget and funding proved to be another ordeal in itself. But, my persistence, patience and determination paid off in the end. Life.less was developed into a full-length feature film in 2009 from a successful short film entitled Riff that I wrote back in 2007. Life.less meant—means—a lot to me, because it is based on true events. As I was writing the script and interviewing people, I learned that some of my closest and dearest friends have been victims of such an atrocity. I felt really amped up and even more determined after learning this; I was not going to stop until I made the film.

When you are so deeply involved with a project: you write the screenplay, and you end up directing it. Is that exhausting?
It is indeed very exhausting, but very rewarding and extremely gratifying at the same time, plus I’ve been doing this for a long time now. In this business it’s very hard to trust that people will do the things needed in a timely manner to get your film to production when you’re not paying or paying very little. Therefore, I have to wear the many different hats, because I know I will not sell myself short on any of my projects.

Did you find yourself happy with the results?
Always! I would never shoot a film that I didn’t like or believe in. I’m always happy with the results, because people—the audience—always respond very well and favorably to my stories, my films.

Dark Secrets—one of your first projects— received a lot of acclaim and was screened at many film festivals, in addition to being nominated for a prize.
Dark Secrets is one of my favorite films that I’ve written, produced and directed. It was shot back in 2004. Again, this was a film based on true events and my two leading actors—Miko Defoor and Nico Ward—were able to deliver superb performances. That project was special to me, because it involved protecting women from selfish men. I have a beautiful, strong and supportive mother, a younger sister, three nieces and many godchildren that are females. So, I was telling the story for them. Dark Secrets is now being developed into a full-length feature as well, to be produced in [the next two years].

Do you think casting is an important aspect of a film?
Casting is one of the most important aspects of filmmaking. The actors have to sell the story; they are instrumental in the success of your film. If your actors can’t fully commit in their given circumstances—the script—and allow themselves to be vulnerable with their characters and live in every moment or simply can’t take directions? You’re screwed. Nobody is going to believe anything that comes out of their mouths, the emotions won’t be there.

You have an upcoming project called Rasin Mwen. It’s being touted as your best project up to date. And that’s while it’s still in development.
I love Haiti! I love its resilience and the fact that despite all that has happened, she’s still standing strong and has so much to offer if you look in the right places. I want to bring a new style of filmmaking to the country. Haitian cinema has suffered for way too long. There are many other countries like Haiti that have delivered successful films that have screened at prestigious festivals such as: Cannes, Sundance, Toronto International Film festival, etc. My objective with Rasin Mwen is to reach such a level. Make the world pay attention to our films and start a new trend of filmmaking that other Haitian filmmakers can follow. Rasin Mwen is a great fiction that is filled with actions, dramas, sex appeal and everything else in between. Just when you think you know what’s going on in the film, you realize how wrong you are. It will be a thrill!

You left Haiti when you were 16, so when it came time to do this movie Rasin Mwen, how did you connect with people down there to actually make this project?
That’s the thing… Even though, I haven’t been there in over 20 years—the instance I touched down in Haiti, it all came flooding back to me. It’s like I never left—that’s part of the reason behind the title Rasin Mwen. Your roots are your roots; they are embedded in you and you are tied up to them forever.

After doing so many films intended for an American audience, what finally made you turn your attention to Haiti?
My plan was always to shoot a film or two or three in Haiti at some point in my career. I’ve turned my attention to Haiti now, because I feel like Haitian cinema is in dire need of a facelift. It’s about time to start putting out serious films that are designed not only to entertain, but at the same address serious and detrimental issues with great production values. Haiti now has the attention of the world. This is the time to show them a different kind of talents in front and behind the camera.

And how would you personally describe Rasin Mwen, outside what is seen in the behind the scenes video?
Rasin Mwen is a story about families and their bonds. It’s a film designed to test the boundaries between what we see as wrong and right. Does the end really justifies the means? Morally wrong actions are sometimes necessary to achieve morally right outcomes. Question is, to what extent?

Are you convinced that film is the best medium to get messages through to people?
Yes, absolutely! Films provide entertainment; a basic need for all humans. Entertainment can meet the need for escapism, levity, knowledge and even fear, among other things. Well-written, well-acted, well-produced, well-directed films have a way of transporting an audience to places that they never thought existed. That’s why I do what I do; it is a privilege to make-believe through words and motion pictures.

Were you influenced by the likes of Spike Lee?
I was influenced by Spike Lee to a certain extent, as he has broken a lot of barriers early on with his filmmaking. But, I am a big fan of Antoine Fuqua, F. Gary Gray, Lee Daniels and Tony Scott. My aim is to one day deliver quality projects like theirs. With the right budget, I’m certain that I can put out projects like them.

Once you’ve wrapped up Rasin Mwen, what are your plans for it?
Make sure the film looks and sounds great! Make sure that every Haitian gets a chance to see it. Get it into as many festivals as possible. Get it picked up and distributed to the whole wide world.

Robinson Vil isn’t a newbie when it comes to filmmaking. Creating stories for the big screen has always brought purpose to the life of this producer, director, and filmmaker behind several shorts and urban films.

His newest production Rasin Mwen is set, and was filmed in Haiti. It’s storyline takes viewers into Haiti’s slums. A young man (David Charlier) gets on the wrong side of a mafia-like pimp, resulting into all sorts of quandaries.

​ Kreyolicious: What was it like filming in Haiti?

Filming anywhere is overwhelming and it was no different in Haiti. The art of film-making can be arduous, especially when it’s done under budget. There were many obstacles we had to overcome as a team to see the project through. Some of the challenging factors were: the heat, traffic and the noise level. I’ve been making movies for over a decade now and I have learned so much; I was prepared. I was determined to do the film no matter what; nothing was going to get in my way.

​ Kreyolicious: Did you do make preliminary trips there to see how things were before you started shooting?

I lived in Haiti for sixteen years, before moving to the United States in 1992—so I knew what to expect. There were no hidden surprises. But, prior to shooting my film Rasin Mwen, I was hired to co-produce and star as the lead in a short film there in 2011. During that production—a one-week shoot—I had to pretty much do the same thing I did on my film. Though, we shot Rasin Mwen for five weeks.

Kreyolicious: Why was it so important for you to bring Rasin Mwen to the big screen?

One of my goals with Rasin Mwen was to bring about a new type of film-making to Haiti that was compatible to other countries. I wanted to do a story with young Haitian actors, that was relatable and relevant. A story that would not only intrigue, but resonate with its people. Screenwriter Wade Ballance and I did just that with the screenplay for Rasin Mwen. I also felt that the presence of good quality Haiti films was lacking. I wanted and determined to change that. I have three other Haiti films that are ready to go—upon securing funding.

Kreyolicious: Were there any things that surprised you about filming a project in Haiti?

How great and accessible the raw talents were. The majority of my cast was new and had never done any type of films before—let alone a full length feature film. We developed such a great bond instantly, many thanks to our casting director Frantz Louis-Charles, who helped me cast ninety percent of the talents in the film.

Kreyolicious: As someone who is living in the USA, what advice would you give to filmmakers about shooting in Haiti?

Don’t do it—unless you have all your ducks in a row. Be ready to work harder than everyone else on your team. Know your script, the story inside out. Be able to think quickly on your feet. Find quality and good people who believe in you, your project and themselves.

Kreyolicious: Are there some things you wished you had done differently?

Not really. If there is one thing I can think of, it would be the funding aspect of the film. I would look harder at securing funding and not go into production until it was fully acquired. My team of actors and crew-members were excellent, I wouldn’t change that. They all worked so hard, I’m indebted to them.

Kreyolicious: So Rasin Mwen has wrapped up. What should we expect from you next?

With the success of Rasin Mwen and new relationships with sponsors and investors, you can expect bigger and better quality films from Villain Pictures. As I previously mentioned, I have 3 more films in development that are ready to go into production. Rasin Mwen 2 is one of them.
