The year 2016 just flew by, didn’t it. Haiti-based radio host Carel Pedre’s year was very eventful. Let’s see how it went for the multimedia personality.

In May, Pedre left Haiti for the United States to join several other journalism professionals from other countries for the IVLP program, conducted by the Department of State.

Pedre closed off the year with more than 149,000 followers on Instagram, and with nearly 100,000 followers on Twitter, not to mention the 200,000+ who follow his personal page and his radio show’s Facebook page. When all his social platforms are tallied up, he has a reach of more than a quarter of a million.

The year 2016 flew by for some and lingered for some. It was definitely singer Saskya Sky’s year. Let’s see why and how come.

The year 2016 had not yet officially ended, and the singer already had the beginning of her 2017 planned out. Her fans can look forward to seeing her Northern USA tour (in association with Prince of PAP Entertainment), which will bring her to Philadelphia, Jersey, New York and some parts of Massachusetts.

Rapper, spoken-word artist and activist Mecca AKA Grimo had a spectacular year. His best moment was no doubt participating in the Millennials Project/Dade Men domestic violence prevention panel in October. Let’s go over his other top moments that highlighted the year 2015 for him.

1. Mecca being honored by Konbit Kreyol.

The community leader’s contribution to the Haitian community has not gone unnoticed. Florida Atlantic University’s Haitian cultural club Konbit Kreyol honored him with a plaque.

2. Mecca was a featured in a Revolt TV documentary.

Coming Home Haiti chronicled Creole-language hip-hop.

3. The launch of Lunion Fait La Force tee-shirt line.

4. Mecca AKA Grimo at Art Basel

Art Basel is one of Miami’s most looked-forward-to artistic events. Mecca AKA Grimo was there.

5. Mecca’s appearance at the 8th anniversary of the Savannah monument in Savannah, Georgia.

He was also present at the Haitian Heritage Festival in St. Augustine, Florida.

If there’s a Haitian cultural event, it’s a safe wager that Mecca will be there.

Haiti has a female rapper…did you know? From growing her clothing line Iyoudi, to starring in a film, to undertaking collabos with fellow artists, and representing Haiti in Montreal and New York, the rapper-singer’s year was dotted with spectacular moments. What were some of the moments that especially made her year? Let’s see, shall we?

1. Teaming up with fellow female artist Sherlee Skai.

This move was the best moment ever…solidarity…unity…the sisterhood in action. The teaming was positive propaganda for girl-to-girl friendships. Hurray!

2. Princess Eud performing at Carifesta.

3. Hob-knobbing with one of her idols, Wyclef Jean.

You know you’re balling when you are taking a photo next to an artist you grew up admiring.

4. Releasing an Egyptian-themed music video with her partner-in-crime Ded Kra-Z.

The video, directed by Trillion Productions, went on to be nominated for (and copping the award) in the Best Rap Music Video at the Ohio-based RLM WMVA Awards.

5. The growth of her clothing line Iyoudi Collection.

In addition to giving her clothing line visibility by wearing pieces from it on every occasion, the rapper showcased her line at various fashion events in Haiti.

If there is one person whose year exemplified the term “turn around” this year, it was Jason Pierre-Paul. In July of this year, the star athlete was in Florida visiting his family and taking part in Fourth of July festivities when he suffered a burn to his finger. Ridicule was rampant. How could someone who was on the brink of renewing a multi-million dollar contract be so careless, some asked? But this is a man who has been the man in his family since he was in his mid-teens due to his father’s blindness. As his family’s breadwinner, he probably had to work on the Fourth of July as a kid, and here he is, a New York Giants millionaire as an adult…he has the right to frolic around a little. The accident was unfortunate, but JPP, Mr. New York Giants, Mr.#90 came back hard.

Like a true warrior, Jason Pierre-Paul took to the streets of New York, knowing very well that paparazzi would be lurking about, awaiting a photo opp. Guess he figured, they could capture “first-look” photos of his hand, but they wouldn’t be able to take away the victory he was about to claim.

2. Working out after the burn incident, and preparing for his comeback.
While many wondered if there would be a “comeback”, JPP was shrugging off their incredulity, and tuning his body for the return back to the field.

4. Signing his renewal contract with the Giants
He that laughs last laughs best, and he that laughs last, while his hand signs a multi-million dollar contract laughs best of all.

5. Pondering on life and doing serious self-reflection.
There’s not a photo to convey this “greatest moment” of Jason Pierre-Paul’s year. It isn’t like paparazzi has access to his soul. We can be sure that during this moment, JPP had a series of epiphanies about life, fame and success. Some athletes have that moment in mid-life. JPP had it while he’s still in his twenties. One minute the whole world is kissing your toes, the next nanosecond, people are going at you as if you had murdered another being, when all that occurred was your committing a careless mistake.

You can wager that JPP has learned that there is life after football, and a whole other world during it.

This past Sunday, Mimi’s Boutiq held the fifth edition of its much-wagged-about fashion show at the Newport Beach Hotel in Sunny Isles, Florida. PR maven Ketia Fequiere served yet again as the primary marketer and publicist for the show.Here’s a countdown of the greatest moments of the 4+ hour fashion and music extravaganza.

1. The abundance of melanin on display.

There are designers, and there are designers like Le’Tron, who’s quite a showman. Well, King Divo and his sweeping fan.

4. The trip to Africa courtesy of Ginen Creations.

With the print patterns that typify Haiti’s African heritage, Ginen Creations reminded us all of the Middle Passage and the beauty of culture through clothes.

5. Tico Armand and her ever-changing outfits.

The community leader/model and host dazzled the audience with her sweeping outfits from the glittery pant she sported in the latter part of the night to the chest-baring, royal blue top she wore mid-way through the show.

6. The entrepreneurial hustle manifesting.

Mimi’s Boutiq was founded by an entrepreneur whose tenacity and persistence evokes inspiration in others.

It’s always good to see the male species whether in formal wear or beachwear.

10. The musical performances.

From MacD of the group Harmonik taking the stage to Phyllisia Ross and direct-from-Haiti singer Rutshelle taking up the stage.

Both ladies had the audience singing along with them. Clad in a floor-length summer print-dress Phyllisia Ross performed “Konsa” and “Ma Vie Sans Toi”, and dabbled at the keyboard on stage. Rutshelle wore an off-the-shoulder mini-print dress and dangling earrings.

Mimi’s Boutiq 5th Annual Fashion Show was more than a fashion show. It turned out to be a convention of sorts for everything from entrepreneurship to sisterhood to music.

The designers such as La Belle Couture Wearable Art showcased sophisticated designs and put on quite a show overall.
