On July 28 1958, ex-army officers to Haiti from Florida landed in Delugé. They take possession of Dessalines Barracks behind the Palais National, in order to remove President François Duvalier. The night of July 28 to 29will be a long confrontation between Duvalier and his attacker. Former Captain Alix Pasquet, Lt. Henry Perpign, Dominique Philippe along with 5 American mercenaries.

Jan 12, 2010… Haiti is hit by a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne and approximately 25 km west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. It was a Tuesday and the earthquake occurred at 4:43 PM (local time).
That is the most devastating earthquake in history.
Over 300 000 people lost their lives, 1.5 million left homeless or displaced and created between $7.8 billion and $8.5 billion in damage.

On January 1, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines declared Haiti’s independence and the country became the first free Black Republic, ending slavery. The Soup Joumou (winter squash), which was prepared by the slaves, for the slavemasters, was forbidden to them. Therefore, since January 1st 1804, its consumption is a strong symbol of celebration and liberation of the Haitian people which is celebrated every year around the world.

Le 1er Janvier 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines, déclare l’indépendance d’Haïti et elle devient la première République Noire libre, mettant fin à l’esclavage.
La soupe au Giraumon qui était préparée pour les maîtres, était interdite aux esclaves. Par conséquent, depuis ce jour, à cette date, sa consommation est un symbole fort de célébration et de libération du peuple haïtien célébrée autour du monde.

Joseph Antoine Tancrede Augustus, was born on March 16, 1856 in Cap-Haïtien, he was president of the Republic of Haiti August 9, 1912 to his death. His presidency, which lasted only 8 months, began in crisis, his predecessor who had just died in the explosion of his palace caused by his political opponents. President Auguste then ordered the reconstruction of the National Palace and established a secret police to thwart conspiracies against the government. Sick, he died during his term on May 2, 1913 in Port-au-Prince.

He was elected by the Council of State on April 16, 1845, as President of Haïti he was intended to be a figurehead for the mulatto ruling class. A failure in that role and with his unpopular campaign against the Dominicans, who he considered as insurgents, he relinquished his office on March 1, 1846, and was replaced by General Jean-Baptiste Riché and his Boyerist backers, after attempting reforms in the government.

Michel Domingue who was born in Les Cayes in 1813, became President of Haiti from June 14, 1874 until April 15, 1876. On June 11 1874, General Domingue was elected for a term of 8 years as president of Haiti. After political turmoil and violence, President Domingue resigned on April 15, 1876 and went into exile in Kingston, Jamaica, where he died a year later.
