He was elected by the Council of State on April 16, 1845, as President of Haïti he was intended to be a figurehead for the mulatto ruling class. A failure in that role and with his unpopular campaign against the Dominicans, who he considered as insurgents, he relinquished his office on March 1, 1846, and was replaced by General Jean-Baptiste Riché and his Boyerist backers, after attempting reforms in the government.
–

In 1805 French troops were still posted on the eastern part of the island (mainly in Santo Domingo) led by the French officer Marie-Louis Ferrand. He mobilized his troops and ordered them to seize all black children of both sexes below the age of 14 years to be sold as slaves. When Dessalines learned the news, he was outraged and decided to invade Santo Domingo, with his forces looting several towns, such as Azua and finally laying siege to the city of Santo Domingo, the stronghold of the French.
–
According to sources, General Henry Christophe (referred to as Enrique Cristóbal), under Dessalines, attacked the towns of Moca and Santiago. The barrister “Gaspar de Arredondo y Pichardo(1)” wrote, that 40 children had their throat cut. They finally retreated after their failed invasion attempt. –
The story continues and says that on 6 April 1805, General Christophe and his troops took all male prisoners to the local cemetery and slit their throats, along with 20 priests. Later he set the whole town on fire along with its 5 churches. On his way out he took along, fashioned like a herd, 249 women, 430 girls and 318 boys. Alejandro Llenas wrote that Christophe took 997 from Santiago alone, and “Monte Plata, San Pedro and Cotuí were reduced to ashes, and their residents either had their throats slit or were taken captives by the thousands, like farm animals, tied up and getting beaten on their way to Haiti.”
–
Many challenge the occurance of this event or its outcome, some even use it to justify the tension between some hispaniolans. We share the infos available to inform and so you can have discussions on it.

The Kingdom of Haiti was established by Henri Christophe on 28 March 1811 when he was self-proclaimed as King Henri I after having previously ruled as president. This was Haiti’s 2nd attempt at monarchical rule, as Jean-Jacques Dessalines had previously ruled over the Empire of Haiti. Following the assassination of Emperor Jacques, the country was split. Henri ruled over the north of the country as President of the State of Haiti and Alexandre Pétion, a free person of color, ruled as President of the Republic of Haiti in the south.
During his reign, Henry built 6 castles, 8 palaces (including the Sans-Souci Palace) and the Citadelle fortress, built to protect the Kingdom from possible French invasions. He created a noble class and appointed 4 princes, 8 dukes, 22 counts, 37 barons & 14 chevaliers. (Source:Wikipedia)

After the death of her spouse King Henry I in 1820, she remained with her daughters at the palace until their departure, the palace was attacked. She was visited by president Jean Pierre Boyer, who offered her his protection. They were allowed to settle in Port-au-Prince. Marie-Louise was described as calm and resigned, but her daughters, especially Athenais, were described as vengeful.
–
The Queen went into exile for 30 years. In Aug. 1821, the former queen left Haiti with her daughters under the protection of the British admiral Sir Home Popham, and travelled to London. There were rumours that she was searching for the money, three million, deposited by her spouse in Europe. She lived the rest of her life without economic difficulties.
–
She lived discreetly with her daughters in Pisa in Italy. They made a grand visit to Rome in 1828. Shortly before her death, she was allowed to return to Haiti. However, she never did and she died in Italy on March 14th 1851 at 72 years old, conflicting sources say she died on the 11th.

On this day of 9 March 1807 Alexandre Petion becomes President of the Republic of Haiti.
–
Following the assassination of Dessalines on October 17, 1806, Pétion championed the ideals of democracy and clashed with Henri Christophe who wanted absolute rule. Christophe was elected president, but he did not believe the position had sufficient power, as Pétion kept powers for himself. Christophe went to the north with his followers and established an autocracy, declaring the State of Haiti. The loyalties of the country divided between them, and the tensions between the blacks and mulattoes of the North and South, respectively, were reignited.
–
Pétion was elected President in 1807 of the southern Republic of Haiti. After the inconclusive struggle dragged on until 1810, a peace treaty was agreed to and the country was split in two.
