The Soup Joumou (winter squash), which was prepared by the slaves, for the slavemasters, was forbidden to them. Therefore, since January 1st 1804, its consumption is a strong symbol of celebration and liberation of the Haitian people which is celebrated every year around the world.
–

Phyllisia Ross conquers France and Switzerland, ya’ll. Late last year, singer-songwriter-composer Phyllisia Ross released her song “Only for You”, as well as its Abdias Laguerre-music video companion. She toured France last year, and returned this past week, making stops in several cities including Nanterre and Paris, before going to Switzerland.

The show is broadcasted in several countries in Africa. The singer also performed on the show. [Photo Credit: Couleurs Tropicales]

The singer has some gorgeous vocals, and made it a point to have a stylish presence too. Her scalp-tight, gold-tinged braids were decorated with a Byzantine-era-like head crown.

For her last performance in France, she wore a white two-piece outfit with Flapper-era fringes.

While in France, she was interviewed on a show called Merci TantineTV on TeleSud, a network which also broadcasts in Africa and other continents with a considerable Diaspora population.

During one of her performances, the singer showed that not only is she skillful on the piano, and when it comes to songwriting, but that she’s also an exciting performer with a strong stage presence. Mid-performance, she turned her back to the audience and facing her musicians (members of a band called Melodeek), she did a classy twerk and busted moves for her fans, inspiring them into a mini-frenzy. In case anybody had memory lapses, she was there to remind them that she’s, well, the complete package. She’s that tifi with the husky voice that can easily slip from English, to Creole and French. She’s that tifi with the video model looks with the deft fingers that can make a keyboard cry all sorts of notes. Oh, and she’s that tifi who can pounce on the stage with the tread and energy of a hungry rapper, and finally she’s that tifi who can sing her gluteus maximus off, while crafting original songs and melodies.

The singer announced that she’s going to be performing with the groups 5Lan and Carimi on the 26th in Miami. She’ll also be one of the headliners at the Mimi’s Boutiq Fashion Show on the 28th of this month.

In 1805 French troops were still posted on the eastern part of the island (mainly in Santo Domingo) led by the French officer Marie-Louis Ferrand. He mobilized his troops and ordered them to seize all black children of both sexes below the age of 14 years to be sold as slaves. When Dessalines learned the news, he was outraged and decided to invade Santo Domingo, with his forces looting several towns, such as Azua and finally laying siege to the city of Santo Domingo, the stronghold of the French.
–
According to sources, General Henry Christophe (referred to as Enrique Cristóbal), under Dessalines, attacked the towns of Moca and Santiago. The barrister “Gaspar de Arredondo y Pichardo(1)” wrote, that 40 children had their throat cut. They finally retreated after their failed invasion attempt. –
The story continues and says that on 6 April 1805, General Christophe and his troops took all male prisoners to the local cemetery and slit their throats, along with 20 priests. Later he set the whole town on fire along with its 5 churches. On his way out he took along, fashioned like a herd, 249 women, 430 girls and 318 boys. Alejandro Llenas wrote that Christophe took 997 from Santiago alone, and “Monte Plata, San Pedro and Cotuí were reduced to ashes, and their residents either had their throats slit or were taken captives by the thousands, like farm animals, tied up and getting beaten on their way to Haiti.”
–
Many challenge the occurance of this event or its outcome, some even use it to justify the tension between some hispaniolans. We share the infos available to inform and so you can have discussions on it.

In 1818 Pétion replaced Boyer as the 2nd President of the Republic of Haiti. Pétion had selected Boyer as his successor as a measure to protect the nation from foreign intrusion.
–
Président Boyer was confronted with Henri Christophe in the north. Christophe’s rule created unrest in the Kingdom. After his soldiers rebelled against him in 1820, in failing health and fearing assassination, Christophe committed suicide. Boyer easily reunited Haiti.
–
Born in Port-au-Prince, he was the mulatto son of a French tailor and a former slave from Congo. He was sent to France to become educated. During the French Revolution, he fought as a battalion commander, and against Toussaint Louverture in the early years of the Haitian Revolution.
–
After the uprising of African slaves in the north of Saint-Domingue in 1791, Boyer joined the French and fought against the grand blancs (plantation owners) and royalists. In 1794, Saint-Domingue was invaded by the British trying to capitalize on the unrest in the formerly wealthy colony. Boyer went to Jacmel, and joined mulatto leader, General Rigaud. While other mulatto leaders surrendered to Louverture in south, Boyer escaped to France with Rigaud and Pétion.
–
Next, he returned to Haiti to protest the independence that Louverture had just achieved. By early 1802, Rigaud and other leaders learned that the French intended to take away the civil rights of mulattoes and re-institute slavery in Saint-Domingue (as they had managed to do in Guadeloupe.) They sent General LeClerc to defeat the rebels, and Boyer collaborated with other native leaders to defeat the French but most had died as a result of yellow fever.
–
Boyer’s rule lasted until 1843, the poor economic situation was worsened by an earthquake. The majority rural population rose up under President Hérard. On 13 Feb. 1843, Boyer fled to Jamaica. He eventually settled in exile in France, and died in Paris in 1850.

Lamartiniere, the second in command after Jean-Jacques Dessalines, at the battle of La Crete-a-Pierrot: Lamartinière looked in vain for Dessalines to come forth from the fortress with relief forces but only an old man, pretending to be an idiot, had worked his way through the French forces, to advise Lamartiniere that the fort was to be evacuated that night. After dark, on March 24, 1802, the besieged rebels opened by bayonet a corridor through more than 10,000 French troops. Most escaped to fight another day. –
Lamartiniere, dezyèm nan kòmandman apre Jean-Jacques Dessalines, nan batay Krèt-a-Pyewo: Lamartinière tap véye gade pou lè Dessalines ap soti nan fò a ak fòs sekou men se sèlman yon vye granmoun ki te pran pòz tankou se te yon moun sòt. Li te travay pou li jwenn wout li nan pami fòs franse yo, pou avize Lamartiniere ke fort a te dwe evakye lannwit sa a. Aprè fènwa, nan 24 mas 1802, rebèl yo te sènen, ak bayonèt yo, solda yo te arive fè yon jan pou yo pase nan mitan yon two franse de 10,000 moun. Pifò réyisi sove pou yo kapab al goumen yon lòt jou.

Pure mulatto, son of a rich planter and a black woman. He was educated in Bordeaux. but was always inclined towards the army. –
Narrow-minded, he never succeeded either in stifling the feelings of prejudice against black Haitians, whom he did not forgive, or against the whites for having the same feeling towards him and towards his social class based off his race. –
About him Madiou said: “He was very dark with crinkly hair. He always wore a wig of smooth hair.” Perhaps, it is true, the smooth-haired wig was connected with his immoderate love of pleasure.
–
By 1796, “Rigaud was virtually dictator” in the south. No black soldiers rose above the rank of captain in his army.
–
Increasingly, Rigaud became jealous of Toussaint’s successes and recognition. Seemingly unable to stop himself, he began turning every victory into defeat. After badly losing a final virulent set of conflicts beginning with ‘the war of the knife’. Rigaud was ordered back to France. –
After a 5 months siege of Jacmel, Petion fled at night but some of his soldiers were caught and killed.
–
Later that year, in July 1800, Rigaud fled the island and tried to go to France, when more problems were awaiting him… .
