Jan 12, 2010… Haiti is hit by a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake, with an epicenter near the town of Léogâne and approximately 25 km west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. It was a Tuesday and the earthquake occurred at 4:43 PM (local time).
That is the most devastating earthquake in history.
Over 300 000 people lost their lives, 1.5 million left homeless or displaced and created between $7.8 billion and $8.5 billion in damage.

My Thoughts On the 7th Anniversary of the Haiti Earthquake

Hi there. So today is a historical day…So seven years ago, Haiti was hit by an earthquake. Guess it’s a good time to share my thoughts on the Haiti earthquake 7 years later.

Last year, I emphasized the need to look forward—

I even told myself that come this year, I wouldn’t write this very type of post that I’m writing now.

Looking forward is important, but guess we could take one last glance backward.

But will it be the last?

I know that a lot of people’s lives changed on that day…on that date.

It would be insensitive to act as if there weren’t losses…so many human lives…so many survivors’ lives…never to be the same…

But how do you heal a wound…do you heal it by constantly looking at it, and picking on it?

Oh, the dilemma…

But again…we can’t deny the transformation…the change that occurred from that event…

Let’s never forget those who lost their lives that day…

But let’s not forget that life stops for no one…

Look backward…move forward….

Happening Today: Gospel Singer Kirk Franklin Haiti Tribute Concert For Earthquake Victims

In the fall of last year, Kirk Franklin announced that he would hold a Kirk Franklin Haiti tribute concert in the memory of the victims of Haiti’s 2010 earthquake. That day has come! As of yesterday, the gospel singer landed in Port-au-Prince a day prior to the scheduled concert date.

He shared videos of himself as he made his way through the Port-au-Prince Toussaint Louverture airport. He was greeted by a group of fans, who had their cameras and smartphone ready as he waved. Members of Haiti’s press and media were also on hand to welcome the singer.

Franklin showed social media voyeurs his hotel room which was covered with a sheet with custom embroidery that read: Welcome Kirk Franklin.

Earlier, he also shown fans a personal visual view of the streets of Petionville, as he cruised through that suburb of Port-au-Prince.

Haiti Earthquake Survivor Jean Bradley Derenoncourt Makes History As Brockton, MA’s First Councilor of Haitian Descent

Nearly eight years ago, Jean Bradley Derenoncourt was among the citizens of Haiti who endured the 2010 earthquake. Now, the natural disaster survivor made history as the first known Haitian to gain a seat as Councilor in the city of Brockton, Massachusetts.

He became a U.S. Citizen a year ago, and launched his campaign in February of this year. Derenoncourt has been a high achiever of many sorts. He attended and graduated from Massasoit Community College with an Associate’s degree in English and earned his Bachelor’s from Suffolk University.

He expressed an interest in public service early on, serving as an intern in the office of Mayor Linda Balzotti, and took on an intern role in the Constituent Services office for one-time Governor Deval Patrick.

Two years ago, the public servant was honored with the Green Key Award, a honor given in the State of Massachusetts for outstanding civic service.

Derenoncourt was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and grew up in La Gonave, Haiti. He’s 27 years old. Ladies, he is single.

On Tuesday, January 12th 2010 at exactly 4:53 pm Haiti was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter Scale. The main shock lasted about 30 seconds, and was followed by several aftershocks in the following weeks, including 8 within the next 2 hours with a magnitude going as high as 5.9 A tsunami was also reported in a small fishing town.
This crumbled Haiti’s already fragile economy, destroyed the infrastructures for the population’s basic needs, hospitals, hotels, cellphone towers, houses, buildings and last but not least, hundreds of thousands of humans’ lives were lost, haitian natives and foreigners. Many family were broken, parentless children. It left people with a lot of psychological damage and physical damage: mental health issues, depression, amputees, etc.

In front of that misfortune, social classes disappeared that day, instead “WE STOOD UNITED” we saw unity among the haitian people and lots of support from the whole world. “L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE” is the motto and the words on Haiti’s coat of arms and on that day It was alive!
