Anacaona was born in Yaguana (now Léogâne) the flourishing capital of Xaragua in 1474. –
She and Yuisa (who was from Loiza which is now known as Puerto Rico) were the two only females Taino Caciques. She was a member of a family of chiefs including her brother Bohechío who was Chief of Xaragua. She was married to Caonabo who was chief of Maguana (in Dominican Rep.). He and her brother were among the top 5 caciques. Queen Anacaona was an adept ruler, warrior, and diplomat who at first had friendly relations with the Conquistadors. The relationship soured, they betrayed her and accused her husband of attacking a Spanish settlement in Northern Haiti then shipped him off to Spain (he died during the trip). Governor Nicola De Ovando felt threatened by Anacaona’s stance and as a result she died a gruesome death.
She has become one of the first Haitian heroes and is regarded as Haiti’s founder.
.
.
.
Anacaona te fèt nan Yaguana (kounye a Léogâne) kapital Xaragua nan 1474.
–
Relasyon an te vinn gate, yo trayi li, yo akize mari li nan yon zafè atak yon koloni Panyòl nan Nò Ayiti. Pou tèt sa, yo déside aréte frè li pou yo voye’l ale Espay (li tou mouri nan vwayaj la). Gouvènè Nicola De Ovando te santi li menase devan Anacaona, kòm rezilta, li touye li yon fason vreman orib.
Li vin youn nan premye ewoyin ayisyen e li konsidere kòm fondatè peyi Ayiti.

After the successful revolt of rebels of Santo Domingo of 27 February 1844, Président Hérard responded immediately and tried to retake the Dominican Republic with an army of about 25,000 soldiers on 10 March 1844.
He entered the new Dominican Republic with the intent of returning the eastern half of the island to Haitian rule.
He was quickly defeated and within a month, he had to retreat with his army back into Haiti.
–
By the end of March, a rebel army of peasants and farmers began to muster near the city of Les Cayes. The rebels, known as piquets, were armed with long pikes (hence the name).
–
Soulouque was a general in the Haitian Army when he was appointed President of Haiti, acquiring autocratic powers to purge the army of the ruling elite, install black loyalists in administrative positions and the nobility, and created a secret police and a personal army. Soulouque declared the Second Haitian Empire in 1849 after being proclaimed Emperor under the name Faustin I, and formally crowned in 1852. He abdicated in 1859 under pressure from General Fabre Geffrard and Dominican military victory. Soulouque was temporarily exiled to Jamaica before returning to Haiti where he died in 1867.
The group of Dominican independence fighters was Called “La Trinitaria” (“The Trinity”), this organization was composed of Spanish Creoles, mulattoes, and blacks, they were led by Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sánchez and Matías Ramón Mella. Independence was proclaimed in the city of Santo Domingo on 27 February 1844, but on the following day a group of ex-slaves led by Santiago Basora, announced its opposition to the independentists. These men suspected that the rebels intended to reintroduce slavery; if this was true, the blacks were ready to fight alongside the Haitians. Trinitaria leaders realized the explosive nature of this situation and moved rapidly to defuse it. The very next day, 28 February provisional President Tomás Bobadilla and Vice-President Manuel Jimenes conferred with Basora and his supporters, and on the following day slavery was again declared abolished. The war to expel Haiti from Dominican soil was a great success: This was the last time ever Haiti would dominate the Dominican nation.
