She was born the daughter of Mireille Durocher Bertin, a brilliant young attorney, and businessman/activist Christophe Hector Jean Bertin. Then on March 28, 1995 after being picked up by her father from school with the rest of her siblings, they hurried over to a devastating scene: Durocher-Bertin’s body, along with that of a client, laid in a bullet-ridden, white Subaru, 15 bullets thrown in her body alone. Mr. Bertin soon afterwards went to live in the Dominican Republic where Sarodj, about 7, would spend her most of her early life.

It would become really apparent with time that Sarodj had inherited her mother’s stunning looks and poise, and she often represented Haiti at beauty pageants, as she did for the Miss intercontinental beauty pageant in 2005. Pageants would take a backseat for awhile, while Sarodj continued her law studies at the Universidad Iberoamericana. In 2010, Sarodj was crowned Miss Haiti and became part of Haitian pageant history when she became the first Miss Universe contestant from Haiti in more than 2 decades.

In spite of some slight brouhaha brought about by her selection, many rooted for her, and for everything that she represented; this spirit of determination and hope. Haiti had lost an estimated 160,000 inhabitants in the earthquake and was still looking forward to tomorrow; Sarodj had lost her mother, and had been pulling forward ever since. The parallel between country and citizen was interesting, if nothing else. At the international showdown for the tiara, the young attorney did not figure in the Top 10, but to some she was already a crowned queen even before she got on the plane to go to Las Vegas.

We thought it only fitting to catch up with her to see what she has been up to since then.

What kind of person is Sarodj Bertin?
I am a normal person, that believes in her country, believes in her people and believes in herself! I just know what I want, and I work hard to make it [come] true.

You were born in Haiti, and lived in Haiti for a time. What are the most precious memories that you have from those days?
I have a lot of beautiful memories of Haiti, with my family and my mother! I remember how we used to camp in Kenscoff, and how we used to go to the beach every weekend in Moulin sur Mer, and sometimes in Port Salut…we had so much fun in every get-away…that I can say I had a beautiful childhood.

There has been this strife between Dominicans and Haitians over the years. Do you think that it will ever be healed?
I believe in fraternity, and I know that this is the solution for the relationship between Haiti, and Dominican Republic. It’s normal to have problems, especially when we share a border, but all problems have solutions. We just need to choose the solution that it’s fair for both.

Your mother the attorney Mireille Durocher Bertin was murdered in Haiti. That would have been led anyone in your place to say, “I will never set foot in Haiti. I will never have anything whatsoever to do with Haiti.” Yet, wherever you go, Haiti is the first word on your lips. How did you get yourself beyond that?
Because I learned how to forgive! Haiti its my country and I will always work to have a better country! I lost my mother, and it was very hard for me and my family, but I believe she would not like me to forget about my country. She always fought for the rights of people in Haiti, and for a better country.

How did you manage to heal from such a horrendous experience?
I am not totally healed; I just accepted it, and moved on! Because I always say that, everything in life happens for a reason, and only God, knows which is. And so we have to learn from each experience, good or bad, easy or difficult.

What are people most surprised to learn about you?
That I am grateful for life and to God, even when I suffer! No one likes suffering, but it does happen, so we have to deal with it, without blaming anyone.

You have several foundations, including one that you started with your father. Would you mind discussing them?
I have only one foundation of my own and it’s Sarodj for a Purpose. I do help many other foundations, including my father’s—Alliance International pour la Récuperation D’Haiti—and another called Manitas en la Calle. I support also many charity work such as Catwalk. I have been working in charity since 2002, but now I created my own foundation, because I have many things I want to do for my people.

It’s been said that there is a great deal of discrimination against Haitians in the Dominican Republic. Have you ever been a victim?
No, I have not. I thank the Dominican Republic, that has been my second home; they gave me and my family the opportunity to grow, study and work in their country. It is true that it’s been said that there is discrimination, but it hasn’t been said that there are also a lot of opportunities.

How do you respond to the saying that beauty is both a blessing and a curse?
I believe that everything in life can be a blessing or a curse, it will all depend on how you use it, and why you use it for. People say that being beautiful opens and closes doors, so make sure you identify the open doors to take advantage of the opportunities.

Was the trip to Port-au-Prince for the Miss Haiti 2010 your first trip to Haiti since you went to live in the Dominican Republic?
No, I have been going back to Haiti since 2007, and even had some clients in Haiti, and worked as their lawyer, so I went back and forward very often, now I am permanently in Haiti.

What is Haitian identity like in the Dominican Republic?
I am Haitian in the Dominican Republic, and all over the world. It’s an honor for me to be a Haitian and to say so.

When you had the Miss Haiti title, there was this negative energy that was going around, about how you weren’t “Haitian enough”.
After being Miss Haiti, I wasn’t in any place enough, I have been traveling all over the world for 2 years now, representing my country, and making people see other things about Haiti. I believe that my job as Miss Haiti, is not to sit down in Haiti, so they can say I am there. If I want to change the image they have of our country, I have to do it internationally.

From what we’ve read, your father married a Dominican woman, and your professional and social circle is almost completely Dominican correct? With that, how have you managed to keep your Haitian identity?
My father never got married after my mother’s death. He still thinks about her, and he still loves her; for him she is still here! But I understand he needs to get married one day, and he can get married with whom he feels like—doesn’t matter if she will be Dominican, or Haitian, or Chinese. I have a lot of Dominican friends, but they are not more than my Haitian friends. I do have also a lot of Venezuelan, Colombian, Italian, French friends. None of my friendships can affect my identity, because I am sure of what I am, and where I come from.

Haitians come in all colors, as do Dominicans. Yet there is this perception that dark equals Haitians, and light equals Dominican. Do you think the fact that your looks lean more towards the supposed Dominican prototype look has helped you escape some discrimination?
No, I do not think so, because everyone in the Dominican Republic knows for sure that I am Haitian. And I believe that us Haitians are the first ones that accent that difference, because all over the world, I have found Haitians that tells me i don’t look Haitian. It seems to me that we are the ones mistaking about our color, because White, Black, Light, Brown, its all the same; Haitian is Haitian.

As a beauty queen, do you ever feel that someone who approaches in friendship or in love, might have ulterior motives?
I don’t, because I don’t judge people, so I don’t expect to be judged.

You took part in the video for the song “Dekole”, and you’re quite the actress. Is acting something you’re actively pursuing?
Actually it is, I have been taking acting classes for more than one year now, and already shot a movie, but my movie hasn’t come out yet.

Do you see yourself ever living in Haiti for good?
I am living in Haiti, now I have my apartment and I spend more then 2 weeks a month in Haiti, the rest traveling.

Do you think you would have become a lawyer, regardless of whether your mom had been one?
Maybe not, because all the things that have happened to me in life, are the things that make me be who I am today! So everything had a influence in my life, especially my mother.

Jesus once said that it is by the fruits that a tree bears that you can evaluate it. What kind of fruit does the Sarodj tree bear?
I am not the one to tell you what are the fruits. I work hard, to give many fruits, and one day you’ll get to see them all mature, and ready to eat!

What’s your advice to all the future Misses of Haiti?
Enjoy, because its a beautiful experience, but work because it’s also a job, you have to represent you country, so never forget the reason why you have been chosen.

What’s next for you?
I want to built a home for children in Haiti, under the name of my mother, and I am raising funds for this project right now. Just shoot a calendar to promote Haiti, and the funds of the calendar, are all for my foundation. Have a couple of movies that we are negotiating for this year, so hopefully I’ll get to do another one.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SARODJ AT A GLANCE

What kind of music do you like? Your favorite stars and band?
I like old music, and classic music, but I enjoy all type of songs. Some of my favorite singers are: Dalida, Edith Piaf, Andrea Bocelli, Marc Antony, Nana Mouskouri.

What do you do for fun?
Reading a good book, or going to the movies, enjoy a cup of coffee with friends. Have a good meal. Having fun for me is easy, because I enjoy everything I do.

What’s your favorite vacation spot?
Italy.

When was the last time you had a really good cry?
When I had a bad dream, I dreamt someone died.

Between your dad and siblings, who are you the closest to?
I’m really close to all my family. But I have a special relationship with my father.

What kind of person would your friends say you are?
They would just say I am a good friend.

And your most prized possession?
My faith.

Your biggest regret so far?
None. I don’t regret anything, because I live every moment with all my energies, and I believe that everything happens for a reason.

Give instructions to your future husband.
Respect, understand, communicate, be fair and you will have no problems with me.

Your favorite book.
God Arrives in a Harley because it’s a book where you clearly understand that you should never judge people for what they look like; you should give them the opportunity to show you how they really are!

Your favorite movie and what you like most about it.
The Secret Garden. It’s a beautiful story, and I learned with it, that when you believe in something you should fight for it. It’s never late to turn back when you are wrong.

Former Miss Haiti Universe Sarodj Durocher Bertin won’t disappear from the spotlight anytime soon. Bertin is widening her wings, and recently signed a deal with Miami-based Maite Makeup company. It was only a matter of time before the almond-eyed beauty would get snatched by a cosmetic company. Sarodj has her own collection with the cosmetic company. We discussed the line and her future as an entrepreneur.

What does this deal mean to you?
It is a project we worked on together, with the Maite Makeup Company, and it is so pleasant to see it come true.

Out of all the cosmetic companies that have approached you, why did you choose to go with Maite?
I chose the Maite Makeup Company, because Maite and Luisa—the owners of the company—are young women fighting for their dreams, and I wanted to support them. Besides, when I tried the entire collection I loved it, the good quality, nice pack[aging], and beautiful colors.

Can makeup make a girl look beautiful?
No, I believe all of us have beauty, and makeup help us show that beauty, but if you feel beautiful, you will look beautiful.

How do you care for your skin when you have been wearing makeup?
I make sure I remove all the makeup with a cleansing soft scrub, and then use a conditioning cream
for the face. Daily I use sunblock on my face and neck, and drink a lots of water.

What’s your favorite piece in the Maite collection?
My favorite piece it my from the collection Sarodj by Maite Makeup Company, the name of the lipstick is: I Love Haiti.

Do you have a special regimen that you follow, in terms of exercise and the like?
I work out 3 to 4 times a week, I do cardio from 30 to 45 minutes, and I try no to eat carbs, after 6 pm.

You’re quite the businesswoman. Can we hope to get a Sarodj Bertin clothing line? Or perhaps your own line of cosmetics down the road?
Well I can tell you that soon you will see Sarodj in other things! But, it’s a surprise. Can’t tell you right now what it’s going to be! Ha ha.

Do you have any special beauty tips to share with the ladies out there?
I like using really organic things for beauty, some of them are: aloe Vera. I use it as a mask for the face, every 3 months. I use brown sugar with honey for body scrub. I put some almond oil in my daily body cream. And I drink tea [tea] everyday.

Sometimes pageant queens duck the spotlight or drop out of the limelight altogether a few years after their wins. Not Sarodj. The one-time pageant queen/philanthropist has been getting endorsements left and right, especially in her adopted home The Dominican Republic. In the above photo, for instance, she’s seen in a post promoting a bus line that travels from Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

With more than half-a-million followers on Instagram, and more than 100,000 on Facebook, she’s a solid digital influencer. Sarodj has mentioned in past interviews that she divides her time between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Firms in the DR can count on her fame as a beauty queen as well as her reputation as an attorney and entrepreneur there to promote their products. And as an attorney for the business sector, Miss Bertin knows a thing or two about partnerships, branding, brand expansion and forming lucrative collaborations.

Here she is promoting Energy Systems RD, an electronics retail store in Santo Domingo.

Dominican Republic-based companies that are keen to social media view her as the ultimate spokesperson for their brands. Palazzo Republica Dominicana is one example. Below, the former Miss Haiti poses in the company’s retail store.

But the brands she sponsors aren’t limited to firms located in the DR.

Sportswear company Lights Out collaborated with her. Here she is wearing some of their gym gear.

The one-time beauty queen mainly aligns herself mostly with beauty and lifestyle brands, and promotes organically rather than in an aggressive and ostentatious manner, which is probably why there’s no outrage of any sort from her fans about the commercialism. If she’s not feeling a product, and wouldn’t normally use it, she doesn’t endorse it.

Sarodj Bertin is quite the business woman. It will be interesting to see what she does next.

Sarodj Durocher Bertin is one of this century’s overachievers. She is a beauty queen. She has her own foundation Sarodj for a Purpose. She is a calendar girl, most recently posing for the 2013 edition for what has become an annual treat for her fans, the Sarodj Bertin I Love Haiti calendar. The Port-au-Prince-born philanthropist managed to raise $60,000 from the sales of the last edition. Bertin is planning a vocational school to teach young Haitian trades, in addition to building an orphanage.

And let us not forget the fact that she got tapped by makeup brand the Maite Makeup Company to be one of the ambassadors of their brand. And now, Bertin is making her way in filmdom. She previously starred in director Angelo Rizzo’s movie The Voodoo’s List, but is now aiming for the U.S. film market, making her debut in that market in the Richard Widmack Belot film Everybody Cheats. The film produced by Nirva Balan and Even Flow, also stars Benz Antoine, along with a host of other talented thespians.

Sarodj and co-star Benz Antoine on the set of Everybody Cheats.

Q & A

Why do you think so many people are fascinated by you? And concerned with your every move?
I believe that people support and follow the ones whom they are able to identify with. Therefore, I’m honored to know that there is many lovely people that identify themselves with me and the things I’m doing.

Do you ever find yourself feeling the need to limit what the public knows about you?
Not really. However, I do believe that is always good to have a little bit of privacy, because any person need to know that they have a moment for their own.

At which point did you get approached about this movie?
I spent a couple of months talking to the director and the producers of the movie; they sent me the script and I liked the story! I think that it’s amazing and that everybody will enjoy it as much as we did it during it’s filming.

How did you prepare for this role?
By studying my script, and using my imagination as an actress to complete the life story of my role.

Any actors and actresses who you’d like to work with?
I admire many actors, but one actor I would love to work with is Will Smith… And an actress I would love to work with is Catherine Zeta Jones.

Are there actresses who you especially look up to?
I admire many of them, but if I have to mention a couple of my favorites ones, then I have to say Catherine Zeta Jones and Julia Roberts.

What attracts you to a movie project?
What attracts me in first place to any project is the story, then it comes the director and of course actors, because is very important to me to feel comfortable with the people I am going to work with.

What movies have you seen that have made an impression on you?
Well, I learn from every movie I watch. Sometimes I get very excited about the characters and actors’ performances. Movies like Hunger Games, Colombiana, Taken, among others have made an impression on me lately.

What’s the latest with your foundation Sarodj for a Purpose?
I just received the donation of the land from a Haitian businessman name Henry Tevenin. Now we are working on the documents such as property title, etc., and hopefully, we will start building the home for children this year!

Do you think one day you’ll leave the law field and pursue acting full-time?
I think that law is and will always be part of me! Being a lawyer is part of who I am. Nevertheless, I am also passionate about acting. I love it and I want to learn more about it everyday, and definitely I want to work more in it!

You actually were crowned Reina Hispanoamericana in 2012. How was that experience?
It was a great experience, as I always say, “Everything that happens in our life should be used to grow as a person”. I feel honored by my new title and crown, and I will use it wisely to bring positivism to all the people who follow me and believe in me.

You are an attorney, you are also a former pageant queen, and you have a foundation, and now of course the acting bug has bit you. How do you manage to stay balanced, and now tear all your hair out?
I like everything I do, so I enjoy it! That’s the reason why I never feel like tearing my hair! [Laughter]

What’s next for you as far as acting is concerned?
My new movie Everybody Cheats will be coming out in April 2013, so wait for it! I know you will love it.

But, she’s never wanted to be a beauty queen that snatches a title then disappears in partial or total oblivion.

A lawyer by profession, Bertin has her own foundation, Sarodj For a Purpose. Acting is the latest dare she’s given to herself and it’s been an obsession with her for a while now. Her latest film is One Night in Vegas, whose cast includes Jimmy Jean-Louis. The helmer of the film is none other than director and producer John Uche, known for his work in the Nollywood and Ghallywood film industries.

One of the things that Sarodj Bertin does each year is put together a calendar to raise funds for her foundation. She discussed the calendar and shared her thoughts on a variety of topics.

How are you doing today?

Great, thank God! I am really happy, because we are just starting a new year full of new opportunities! [Smiles]

What was it like putting together the latest edition of your calendar?

The whole process has been really exciting, and I’m very pleased to see how the calendar has been well received every year. I really enjoy doing it; it’s like my baby! I’m present in every stage, and that makes it more personal. My photographer is Hector Placeres and my designer Joel Reyes. This is the second year that I’ve worked with them, and making a dream project come true with the same team creates a bond that makes you feel like we are a big family. Every one of us is fully committed with every part of the calendar. That makes me feel happy and incredibly proud. As the previous ones, this edition has been shot in Haiti, because the main purpose of the calendar is promoting my beautiful country. The next edition (2015) will be different, because we are planning to find twelve models in Haiti. I want to do it this way, in order to give the opportunity to Haitian talent to show themselves to the world.

What’s the latest with your foundation Sarodj With a Purpose?

We still are waiting for the papers of our land, so we can start building. After we start the project, then we will have some fundraisers activities probably in New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Santo Domingo, and Haiti.

As someone who has practiced law for some time, what are some principles that you’ve learned in that career, that you’ve find are applicable to other aspects of your non-law professional life?

I believe everything you learn in life is a plus, and makes you grow. By practicing law, I’ve reinforced my principles and beliefs in the importance of responsibility, honesty, loyalty, punctuality, privacy, and objectivity.

Have you ever been a victim of lookism?

Physical attractiveness is associated with good things in our society; therefore, I believe that sometimes it could open a few doors for you. But if you just have the look, and not the spirit, the door will not stay open. I have not been victim of lookism, that I know [of], and I think we have to be careful with stereotypes of any kind.

So, you are in a new movie One Night in Vegas.

One Night in Vegas was a great experience for me. I loved shooting this movie, because I loved the story and I loved the team. All of them were so nice between each other that we became really good friends. The name of my character in the movie was Francesca, and I loved playing her. When I read the story, I started to imagine her past life, her family, her goals, her education…etc. All of that helped me a lot in understanding her and the difficult situation she was in. And for many days while I was shooting, I wasn’t Sarodj, I was Francesca! [Smiles]

At one point or another, we’ve all heard variations of, “I don’t have any friends.” Or stuff like, “I’d rather be friends with guys, than fellow females.” Or, “Friendships with other girls is too much drama”. How can girls stand up for the sisterhood and reject such thinking?

I think the first thing to do, is to always start from zero. You cannot start a good friendship if you are thinking about someone that betrayed you in the past. Not everyone is the same… So, let’s give ourselves the chance to find nice and real friends.

No one is perfect. No one leads a perfectly jovial life 365/24/7/60. What is the best way to deal with obstacles and setbacks—and adversity overall—in life?

Nothing is easy; and if it was, we wouldn’t appreciate it. Therefore, just believe in yourself, and do what you want to do. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t! Work hard, and if you fail, just stand up again, and continue…

You’re doing more and more movies. Is there an actress whose career you’d like to pattern your own after? What do you hope to accomplish as an actress?

I’m passionate about acting! I admire a lot of actors, but two actresses I really love are Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Angelina Jolie.

Is singing—cutting a record—an ambition of yours as well?

Not really, but I do like singing… You never know, right? [Winks]

What are you most proud of?

I am proud of everything I’ve accomplished so far in my life, because it opens my mind to a new and bigger aim!

What are some things that are on your list of things to accomplish that you have yet to accomplish?

My acting career, which I am actually working on; the start of the construction of the technical professional center for orphans; and to develop new merchandise as an entrepreneur. After I get where I want, then I will think of something else. [Smiles]

What if? Could it be just a dream? Well, just for today, that dream can come to fruition. Here are her responses from a girl-to-girl talk I had with her.

Kreyolicious: I think when most people look at you, they see confidence and self-assuredness. Have you ever had moments of low self-esteem and self-doubt?
Sarodj Bertin: I believe we all have, because we are human and our feelings can always affect our state of mind. What I have manage is to control myself and not let that happen to me…choosing to be happy with what I have and what I get, even if it’s not what I wanted. This has been possible by [my] understanding that [when bad things happen, it’s] always for good, and [also] by acknowledging that the bad things happen so we can appreciate the good. I can say that I am very positive and I always look at a different angle in [every] situation or [every] case, because there is always something positive, and that is what I go for…“the positive side”.

Kreyolicious: If you could speak to the Sarodj from five years ago, what would you tell her?
Sarodj Bertin: I would tell her, that she should never hesitate. Time is a tool and we have to use it wisely. Sometimes we take more time than needed to make a decision, and that time will never come back. So, when you believe [in] something, just go for it. No hesitation. You know your path…just go, and do not ever stop…there is no limit.

Kreyolicious: When do you feel most beautiful?
Sarodj Bertin: When I get love from any child, I believe the purest love is a [child’s] love, because there are no conditions and no expectations. They see and feel real beauty, the beauty of the soul…so when [a child] shows me love that’s the moment when I am the most grateful and I feel the most beautiful.

Kreyolicious: Is there anything that you used to be terrible at, whether a skill or something else that you have improved on. What was it? How did you get better at it?
Sarodj Bertin: I was very impatient. the first steep to overcome that defect was to accept it. Then I started working on it, correcting myself every time I would notice I was being impatient. with a lot of practice and concentration, I can say I overcame it pretty well.

Kreyolicious: What books have you read lately that have had an impact on you?
Sarodj Bertin: Everything I read have an impact on me, because I learn from every book, script, letter or even email that I read…but I could say a book that I would recommend any time to anybody would be The Art Of Happiness by Dalai Lama And Howard C. Cutler.
