This year marks the 228th anniversary of the ceremony of Bwa Kayiman, where a secret voodoo ceremony was held deep in the woods of Cap Haitien (north of Haïti), on August 14, 1791. Presided by Dutty Boukman (Jamaica-born, voodoo priest and Imam) and Cecile Fatima, it was considered to be the official starting point of the Haitian Revolution, although there were previous rebellions held on the island prior to it. Others such as Georges Biassou, Jean F. Papillon and Jeannot Bullet were leaders of the early revolution who were also attending this ceremony. This voodoo ceremony sparked the Haitian Revolution which led to the birth of the first black independent nation and slaves to freedom.
–
–

Born in Cap-Henry, actual Cap-Haïtien, he was the son of a high-ranking official in the regime of Henri Christophe, and Blézine Georges, Christophe’s illegitimate daughter. Alexis joined the army in the 1830s, serving under President Jean-Louis Pierrot, his father-in-law. He became President on 21 December 1902 at the age of 82. Alexis held on to power for the next six years but his regime was plagued by rebellion. During his presidency, he judged and condemned all statesmen who stole state’s money in 1904. In January 1908, he proclaimed himself President for Life. Firmin’s supporters launched a new revolt against Alexis. A famine in the south that same year led to violent food riots and a new rebellion, this time from the south, led by General François Antoine Simon. Ousted from power on 2 December 1908, Alexis went into exile in Jamaica and later relocated to New Orleans with his family, where he died on 1 May 1910. –

On 23 April 1876, he replaced Michel Domingue as the first president of the provisional government, before becoming President of Haiti non-provisionally on 17 July 1876. During Boisrond-Canal’s administration, tensions in domestic politics and foreign affairs grew, particularly because of the differences between liberal and nationalist parties in Parliament. Following a stormy debate in the House of Representatives on 30 June 1879, there were riots in Port-au-Prince in which the Liberal leader Jean-Pierre Boyer-Bazelais played a significant role. Although the government managed to restore law and order, Boisrond-Canal resigned as president on 17 July 1879. After his resignation, Boisrond-Canal left again in exile in Jamaica.
–
–
23 Avril 1876, li ranplase Michel Domingue kòm prezidan gouvènman pwovizwa a, anvan li vin prezidan 17 Jiyè, 1876. Sou gouvènman li a, te gen anpil tansyon politik domestik ak entenasyonal … Patikilyèman pou tèt diferans ki te genyen ant pati liberal ak pati nasyonalis yo nan palman an. Apre yon deba ki te gen nan Chanm Reprezantan an nan 30 jen, 1879, te gen revòlt nan Pòtoprens ak lidè liberal Jean-Pierre Boyer-Bazelais te jwe yon wòl enpòtan. Malgre gouvènman an te reyisi nan restore lòd piblik, Boisrond-Kanal demisyone 17 Jiyè, 1879. Apre demisyon li, li pati an ekzil nan Jamyik ankò.
