After the successful revolt of rebels of Santo Domingo of 27 February 1844, Président Hérard responded immediately and tried to retake the Dominican Republic with an army of about 25,000 soldiers on 10 March 1844.
He entered the new Dominican Republic with the intent of returning the eastern half of the island to Haitian rule.
He was quickly defeated and within a month, he had to retreat with his army back into Haiti.

By the end of March, a rebel army of peasants and farmers began to muster near the city of Les Cayes. The rebels, known as piquets, were armed with long pikes (hence the name).
